Experience in Eindhoven, Netherlands by Mayke
What is it like to live in Eindhoven? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city does not have pretty buildings or things you definitely have to see. However, there are a lot of events in Eindhoven that are awesome. Dutch design week, Dutch technology week, Glow (light festival) and multiple small festivals or events.
How much does it cost to live in Eindhoven?
For accommodation I think around €350 a month. Living expenses are average. The most difference is which supermarket you go to. Dirk, Nettorama, Aldi and Lidl are cheap. Albert Heijn has the most stores but is expensive.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The Dutch have their own cuisine, but it is rather simple and you will not find it in restaurants. Our restaurants are mostly Italian, Spanish, Greek, Chinese or Japanese. We do have the so called snackbars. They are not restaurants but you can get fries and snacks there. A few snacks are typically Dutch and definitely worth a try, such as Bitterballen, Kroket and Frikandel.
Is it good to eat out in Eindhoven? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes. There are several spots with very good food. If you have a bit of money to spend, go to Dijk 9 and take the surprise menu with accompanying wine menu. If you want more affordable, go to the street called Dommelstraat, it has several small restaurants, each with a different cuisine.
Is the nightlife good in Eindhoven? Where is good to go?
Yes. Eindhoven has the largest street of different bars and clubs of the Netherlands, called Stratum or Stratums end. It has around 50 places you can go to, each with different music and audiences. For example, go to Altstadt for rock.
