Erasmus Experience in Dubrovnik, Croatia by Alee
Why did you choose to go to Dubrovnik, Croatia?
I had more interesting options aside from Dubrovnik, but now that I'm here, I don't have any regrets, It's the pearl of the Adriatic, great climate, wonderful beaches and relatively close to other countries which you have to visit, although aren't well known, such as Serbia, Bosnia or Montenegro.

How long was your scholarship? How much money did you receive to help?
My scholarship lasted 10 months, and I will stay for this period of time thanks to financial help from my family, as the grant is only really enough for the first five months, 350 euros, but with 100 euros a month for the other five months. Give my thanks to the Andalucia council.
How is student life in Dubrovnik?
The university of very small, and as a result there are less Erasmus students. There are 25 of us in total, plus some people who aren't Erasmus but are in the similar situation. Because of how small the group is, we are like a family, we go everywhere together. ESN is the organisation which organises Erasmus parties here. They do try, but their parties are very Croatian in style, something which sometimes is boring to Erasmus students.

Would you recommend the city and university of Dubrovnik to other students?
The city is wonderful and getting up every day seeing monuments and spectacular landscapes is a delight. The university is good, a lot of work but the exams are super easy. Thanks to Erasmus, there are loads of free sports activities, which is a good way to meet Croatian people, who are initially very closed-off until you get to know them.

How is the country's food?
Very much Italian in style, nothing ground breaking in general. In order to try 100& Croatian food you have to go to the pricier restaurants. The problem is the city is so touristy that the reasonably-priced places serving traditional food are not good quality.

Was it hard to find accommodation in Dubrovnik?
It's very difficult to find as online they only have tourist apartments, so I recommend being patient and getting in contact with ex Erasmus. In my case, my flat is better when compared to others, but this is because I was recommended it by a Spaniard, without them I wouldn't have found it.
What's the cost of living like in Dubrovnik?
It's a bit more expensive than Seville, but once you're here, you can find places which are quite reasonable.
How was learning the language? Did you take a course at university?
The language is very different than Spanish, although if you speak bits of Italian they understand. Although it's not a problem as everyone in the city speaks a good level of English.

I didn't do a language course, although I was given the chance.
What is the cheapest way of getting to Dubrovnik from your city?
By plane, although you have to spend hours looking for offers. The airport is tiny, and as a result there aren't many flights.
What places would you recommend for a night out in Dubrovnik?
There are few nightclubs here, Relevin and Skybar. Then you have the Irish bars. It's best to host a party on your terms.
