My experience in Dakar, Senegal by Lamine
What's life like in Dakar? Would you recommend living there?
Dakar is a very friendly town, it's sunny all year round. Around November-March time the temperature drops significantly to around 15-22°. The people here are so welcoming and it's not too expensive to live there.
What's student life like in Dakar?
There's a great student atmosphere and there are loads of private schools there, like the Cheikh Anta Diop University which has a huge campus with a lot of facilities. There are loads of activities that students can do, such as televised competitions where they offer prizes and even scholarships. Basically, you have to go visit, it's a great place to study.
What's the cost of living in Dakar?
Well, it's not too expensive, but sometimes renting a place can be expensive. Food and transport are both reasonably-priced though.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Dakar? Do you have any advice?
Accommodation is highly sought after in Dakar, so there aren't many apartments or studios available. But if you know someone before coming here, they can help you find a place.
What's the food like? What are some of your favourite meals there?
There is a place called Faurette in the 'Place de l'Indépendance' square in the city centre, there is the Terrou Bi hotel which overlooks the sea. There's also Baramundi which is in the 'Les Almadies' neighbourhood. You've also got 'Pointe des Almadies' which is located in the same neighbourhood, Yumi Yumi near to Cheikh Anta Diop too. All of these are fine-dining places except for 'Pointe des Almadies' where they do a braised fish special.
