Vor Frue Kirke

The introduction

Hello everyone, I hope, that you are all doing just fine!

In this article I want to tell you about this place in Copenhagen, which is a pretty wonderful one, and, besides, it’s a church and it’s called Vor Frue Kirke, which means “Church of Our Lady” in English. It’s a pretty amazing building from the outside, as well as inside , and it kind of resembles those temples in ancient Rome with their columns in the entrance.

About Vor Frue Kirke

Well, as I have already told you, the church is called the “Church of Our Lady” and it’s situated on Frue Plads. Nearby it is located the main building of the university of Copenhagen.

The building of the church dates back from the 19-th century. It was designed by the architect Christian Frederik Hansen and it was built in 1829. The building of the church began in 1817, when the King Frederik the  6-th put the foundation stone there. However, there had been church since 1209 , but it was destroyed in 1807. It was the Napoleonic wars, when the English attacked Copenhagen and they used the shells to shot at the civilians from the  ships. It was the night of September the 5-th, when they shot the church and it was set on fire and destroyed.

The nowadays building was decorated by the Danish famous Bertel Thorvaldsen. You can see his work “John Preaches in the Desert” above the porch and “Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem” above the doors. While on the outside, there are Moses and David statues on the sides.
