Three words: edible cookie dough!

Cookie Dough Creamery - what is the hype about?

When I travelled to New York a few months ago, I was surprised how many unique dessert places that the Big apple has to offer. And one dessert that particularly stood out, was the edible cookie dough in the form of ice cream. No, not the regular, cookie dough flavoured ice cream.

Actual cookie dough in different flavours. Sounds crazy? Maybe, but people seem to love it, because when I decided to try it at the famous Cookie Do ice cream shop, where the craze apparently started, the line went around the block. So guess what, I decided that I would rather spend my time exploring the city.

The (in)famous Cookie Do ice cream shop. Notice the sign that says: The line begins across the street - for real!

See the line over there? This was the reason I decided not to wait.

When I left New York, I was actually disappointed in myself for not waiting in line because cookie dough ice cream sounds like something extremely delicious. So the first thing I did once I got home, is go online to see if there is something similar close to me. And by close to me I mean up to two hours away. Yes, I was indeed willing to drive for two hours just to try that cookie dough ice cream.

Well, I found out that Cookie Do is unfortunately only located in New York, but I found a similar place in Columbus, Ohio, called Cookie dough creamery, which is situated only an hour away from me. So on my first possible day off, I decided to drive to Columbus and try the cookie dough ice cream.

Where is Cookie dough creamery situated?

You can find Cookie dough creamery in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. More precisely, on 7227 North High street, in a shopping centre, called The shops at Worthington place. The place is tucked away between other stores, and you can easily walk past it without noticing. The shopping centre has a pretty confusing layout, so the best thing you can do is check the mall map to see where to go.

Cookie dough flavours

Cookie dough creamery offers quite a few different flavours. And yes, you can try them all without paying for each one of them separately. You can read more about it in the next chapter.

After finding out that you can try all the flavours, that was exactly what I did. The flavours that they had during my visit, were peanut butter (this was my least favourite, but only because I hate peanut butter), snickerdoodle (also known as pure deliciousness), oreo (do I even need to say how good it was?), brownie batter (again, needless to say it was delicious), chocolate chip cookie dough (tastes just like real cookie dough…oh wait…) and sugar cookie (this one was my second least favourite, because the flavour was simply too sugary for me).

Next to the cookie dough station, you will notice a variety of different toppings, which you can use free of charge. How awesome is that? Pretty awesome, I would say. And please do yourself a favour and put some hot fudge and hot caramel sauce on the top of your edible cookie dough ice cream.

You will also notice that Cookie dough creamery also offers regular frozen yogurt, but from what I saw, most people go there for the edible cookie dough.

The process

Yes, there is indeed a whole process to get the edible cookie dough ice cream at Cookie dough creamery. Once you get to the cashier, you have to pick the size that you want - either small, medium or large cup. Hint - small cup is big enough. You might die from stomach cramps if you choose a big one.

I am only partly kidding - when reading the reviews of Cookie Do in New York, several people reported pain in their stomach after eating more than one small cup. Well, sounds just like the outcome after eating regular cookie dough.

After choosing the cup size, you can pay and then go to the ice cream station, where you can scoop the cookie dough ice cream inside the cup. The awesome thing about this place (other than their delicious cookie dough ice cream) is the fact that you can pick as many flavours as you want, as long as all of them fit into your cup. And the price will always be the same, regardless on whether you put one tiny scoop in your cup or you totally filled it up.

Then, if there is still space in your cup, you can proceed to the toppings station, which range from different hot sauces (marshmallow, hot fudge, hot caramel, white chocolate), you can also choose from chocolate crumbs, jelly beans, cereal, oreo crumbs and so on. I was trying to keep it simple, but ended up getting hot fudge and hot caramel sauce with a drizzle of oreo crumbs and M&M candies on top. Oh well, you only live once, right?

My delicious creation. Do not judge me, I love hot fudge.

Eating in progress. Yummy!

Is it expensive?

A simple answer would be: it is just about as expensive as a scoop of ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s ice cream shop, meaning it is not expensive at all. But, unlike at Ben and Jerry’s, Cookie dough creamery lets you scoop as much cookie dough ice cream as you can fit in the cup. And I bet two scoops of Cookie dough ice cream that Cookie Do in New york is much more expensive.

A few words for the end…

As a lover of everything sweet and sugary, I have to say that this dessert deserves a place among the top three desserts I have ever tried. And after finishing my pile of ice cream cookie dough at Cookie dough creamery, I had to go back inside and tell the lady at the counter that this is the best thing I have ever tried. I indeed had a little stomach ache after a while, just like the online reviews mentioned, but it was totally worth it.
