Erasmus Experience in Cologne, Germany by Benjamin
Why did you choose to go to Cologne, Germany?
I have chosen to go to Cologne because I've been learning German for nine years but I didn't get the opportunity to go to Germany.
I said me ''It is the moment to apply for an internship''. German is so difficult to learn at school (in France) and we learn only the theory in France too. It was the opportunity to learn more and improve my language.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was in Cologne for an Internship. I'm studying in International Trade and to confirm my first year of studies, I had to intern in a foreign country.
What is the student lifestyle like in Cologne?
I like their way of life: Students are doing party each weekend, live it up, they are often in the park to play or to benefit of the sun.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Cologne to other students?
Of course. This city is very dynamic (but on Sunday all things are closed, althouh it isn't a problem). There is a big street for the shopping and a lot of things to discover about the culture (the cathedrale, the bier x). People are nice and they help you easily when you need help.
What is the food like?
They have some specialities like: schnitzel- the biere(kölsch)- bratwurst or currywurst. Very nice I like it!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Cologne?
I was living in the Kolping Jugendwohnen, near Neumarkt (in the city center). It wasn't so expansive. I recommend you to live here because it very great, people are nice and this is a good way to improve german because their are some Germans too.
How much does it cost to live in Cologne?
Only 350 per months.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Cologne from your city?
I live in Reunion island (near Mauritius, in Indian ocean). At first I have to fly to Paris and taking a TGV to go directly to Cologne.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Cologne?
If you like dancing there are différents kind of club in Cologne (salsa, afro, less modern music). The Chicha bars are very good too. There are a lot of students.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Cologne?
I've forgot the name but in Heumarkt's place there are a lot of good restaurant.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Cologne in the future?
Viel spaß (enjoy your life)because this city is beautiful.
