Into the void
3842 metres up in the Alpes
3842 metres into the void was something that I would never have imagined myself going into before I arrived in Chamonix.
It took me about two train changes and a bus before I arrived in Chamonix. This was because I had taken the train that was heading in the other direction. Do take note of the direction of the train before you board as 2 trains could be on the same platform at the same time but in different direction.
I was in awe when I arrived in Chamonix. The first thing that you will notice is the Mont Blanc, it was massive.
My friends and I made our way to our accommodation before heading out for dinner. The main town of Chamonix is pretty small so you could just walk and there is no need to take a bus. However if you would like to visit other towns near Chamonix, there are public transport available too. (Do ask your accommodation reception if they provide any transport passes during your stay in Chamonix)
Dinner in Chamonix during the winter was, of course, FONDUE! After a long day of travelling to Chamonix, having a warm fondue was definitely satisfying. The fondue is usually served with cuts of meat, potatoes and a side of salad. It may seem quite little but the richness of the fondue would make your tummy full but happy!
Day 2
On the second day, I headed to the summit of Mont Blanc. The two way ticket for the cablecar ride costs around 60 euros. I know it is expensive but every penny is worth it ! Fun fact : the Mont Blanc massif is also known as 'Aiguille du Midi' which translate to 'Needle of the Mid-day'. The cablecar ridetook about 20 minutes where you will have to take a transfer in the middle at around 2,317m, known as Plan de l'Aiguille. The moment I arrived at the summit, it was amazing. It is just covered in snow everywhere. Its all white snow covering the paths and strong winds would start smashing into your face. Yes, smashing. The wind at the summit can go up to 200 km/h ! You enter a tunnel where you can walk around the entire place. Be prepared to take lots of photo at the summit because every single corner is a new experience and you just want to capture every moment up there. In one of the rooms, you get to stand on a glass void which sticks out into the Alpes. Below you is just a glass standing between you and a free fall down into the void. There is also a cafe in the area which is not really overpriced considering the fact that people can spend around 3 hours in the summit and could get hungry at times. Be sure to grab a souvenir or two when you are up there because you might not be able to get anything similar below in the main town!
Reality hits when my stomach starts grumbling and I had to descend for lunch. I really enjoyed my morning up in the Mont Blanc because it is the highest i ever been ! (other than being on an aeroplane duh) Make sure to check the weather forecast before heading up or else the view might not be as good !
