Chambéry, France
Why did you choose to go to Chambéry, France?
Rather than choosing it, it was assigned to me by your university.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The grant was for 10 months and I got around €6, 000 between the grants from the university, the European Commission, the Madrid council and the French government.
What is the student lifestyle like in Chambéry?
There are a lot of exchange students here, so there's always an international atmosphere.
Would you recommend the city and the university of Chambéry to other students?
It's not the best city in the world to go to for Erasmus, it breaks the mould, it's not very big, there aren't any big clubs, but it'll win you over and it's in an ideal location to travel from.
What is the food like there?
French cooking in magnificent.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Chambéry?
I went before the start of my scholarship, so I found it in person.
How much does accommodation cost there? What are the prices like in general?
There's a whole range, like any other city. The good thing is the financial aid you get from CAF, which will pay for a bit of your accommodation.
Regarding the general prices, the cost of living is a bit higher, but you won't notice much of a difference between here and Spain.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
I got on really well with the language, I came back with a C1 level of French. The university offers various French courses and, for students of tourism, French covers all the fields of the language.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Chambéry from your home city?
By plane from Madrid to Lyon and then a bus to Chambéry.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Chambéry?
Well... L'Opera, RDC, O'Pogues, Le Cardinal... and a few others!
And to eat in Chambéry? What are some of your favourite places to go?
I don't remember its name, but there was a Savoyard restaurant that served the most amazing fondues.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The whole region: Annecy, Switzerland, Lyon, Grenoble and all of the natural lakes and wilderness they have there.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Chambéry in the future?
Enjoy everything, the good and the bad, the time there will go by way too quickly and once you've been on your Erasmus, you'll be Erasmus forever.
