Travelling through Northern Ireland by bus, we stopped at Carrickfergus Castle, a Norman castle originally almost completely surround by sea, today still in a strategic position. The crossbow loops gave it a good defence, and the harbour delivered supplies. It was only taken by the French in 1760, but soon recaptured.
Upon approaching the outer castle walls, you are greeted by this friendly English gentleman pointing his rifle at you. No offense though ... must have been a reflex.
Inside the castle, you could see the battlements and parapets with some cannons in place. Battleships, anyone? In fact, a local commander managed to lure a ship of the Royal Navy into the Northern Channel and defeat it ...
This is - apart from myself on there - the secret place you see when you climb down the steps behind the castle. I always liked exploring, you know? Sneaking up for a surprise attack ... just kidding. Anyway, you can see the coast in the distance.
*displeased look* "SIR STEP BACK I AM ON DUTY!" *lick*
My friend Elmer from the Netherlands did this comic scene ... I love how the expression on the soldier's face matches the moment! Well done!
My next post will include an absolute highlight of Northern Ireland ... be prepared!
