Experience in Canterbury, United Kingdom by Bima
What is it like to live in Canterbury? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city can cater to all your needs. I'd say its smaller than a normal city but provides a lot of restaurants, shops, cafes, clubs, supermarkets, buses and train services.
The cathedral is what brings in all the tourists, as well as the theatre.
I would recommend living here, its very pretty outside the city, close to the university and even a 20 minute drive to the beach.
What is the student lifestyle like in Canterbury?
A lot of students come out to the city centre to party as there's a few main clubs in the city and some more around the edge. For me the clubs aren't very good as sometimes quite quiet, it depends on the night. Watch out for drink prices too, although it has to be said, student nights are obviously the most beneficial to students. There's also a lot of kebab and fast food places to drunk eat.
A lot of students frequent at Kent uni.
How much does it cost to live in Canterbury?
On average per person, not including bills... £375 per month. Also Wincheap which is right next to Canterbury, you could almost call it Canterbury, is a great place for students and people to rent out.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Canterbury? Is there any advice you can give?
Not difficult at all. The main offices/shops for renting flats or houses is on Castle Street, for both student and professional accommodation. I used Mann, were helpful with my situation and I was able to find a house for a year in just one visit. They give good advice too.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is so diverse in Canterbury. You have the typical chains of Italian, French etc food. Then There's a few gems in the mix which provide delicious food. Cafe du soleil, Deesons, Marlowes and a lot more lunch places too, just opened, a pulled pork small shop which for £5 you get a juicy pulled pork bun with a sauce and topping of your choice, delicious! The fudge shop close by is also lovely. So many places to choose from.
Burgers in The Shaskespeare are great!
What places would you recommend visiting in Canterbury?
The cathedral is an obvious. And the theatre, all very traditional.
Is the nightlife good in Canterbury? Where is good to go?
Bramleys is a great cocktail bar, Thursdays you get buy one Get one free, so do that! Clubs include- Chill, the Cuban, the Ballroom, Chemistry and more but those are the main ones. Pick the right night to go though.
What advice would you give future students heading to Canterbury?
The University is good, currently extending the library. Learn Chinese, it's great! Most students find accommodation really early to get best prices and location. Share with friends if possible.
Shop in Aldi, it's a life saver! Bus pass is useful too, 40 minute walk to the uni. Also trains are quite expensive so think about that... Canterbury West goes to London.
