Cádiz

Happy Saturday afternoon everyone!

In the second post of this blog dedicated to Spain I want to describe my experience on my trip to Cádiz, which I had the fortune and pleasure of visiting only once during a 12 day cruise on the Mediterranean and Atlantic sea during the summer of 2015, on Monday 3rd August 2015 to be exact.

Cádiz is a small and dazzling pearl of Spain, sheltered on a ridge overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, as well as being the capital of the region of Andalusia.

The thing that struck me most about this gracious city was the tranquillity, which one breathes on its streets, but also the weather made milder by the Atlantic breeze.

Another of its qualities is undoubtedly that it's a people-oriented city. It's actually very simple visiting in on foot.

After the boat docked in the port at 8am, located directly in the city centre, around 10am I'd disembarked to discover more of this little Spanish jewel, as always equipped with a geographical map and the unforgettable camera.

At the front of the harbour one finds themselves in Plaza de España, a big square surrounded by palaces in which stands out the majestic Monument to the Constitution of 1812, of which I attach a photo:

Turning left the Paseo Canalejas begins, that is, a type of promenade with a wide "green space", that's ideal for a relaxing and refreshing stroll. It was nurtured by a gentle Atlantic breeze, and you could smell a salty scent mixed with grass from the meadows adjacent to the promenade. During the pleasant stroll I captured this seagull:

The walk ended at the entrance to Parque Genoves, a very particular park in which there's a small lake in which fake dinosaurs swim in, and with an artificial cave, the inside of which can be accessed in order to see the attached Gruta waterfall.

However, the main attraction of Cádiz is without doubt the magnificent Cathedral, built in the Baroque style but with Neoclassical elements, which is distinctive due to its yellow dome.

Here's a photo for you of the outer facade of the cathedral:

On the way back to the harbour, I was lucky enough to see a fascinating flamenco show, performed by a couple of dancers.

Obviously I took a picture of this moment:

Cádiz boasts a wonderful historic centre, rich with squares and palaces that form a maze of streets in which you can calmly lose yourself. A walk along its coast also allows to you enjoy fantastic views of the whole bay which gives its name to the city.

Cádiz is a destination which some tourists unjustly don't consider, preferring to visit the nearby and more popular Seville, which is around 100km (62 miles) from the city which is also a must-visit, because believe me when I say it's worth it and without doubt its discrete charm will surprise you.

I hope you liked my account of my trip to Cádiz. I'll see you in another post in which I'll tell you about another city of the splendid country of Spain that I was lucky to have visited.

¡Nos vemos pronto! (See you soon! )
