Monsy's Experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina

What do you think of Buenos Aires as a place to live? Would you recommend it? What is it like?

Buenos Aires was characterised as being the cradle of many European influences and waves of immigrants, including Italians, Spaniards and Arabs, to name a few. The 20th century was characterised for being very rich and this can be seen in the splendid architecture of its neighbourhoods, its food and other customs. However, in recent times, things have taken a slight downturn: there has been lots of insecurity and huge inflation (even for some foreigners it is expensive). The transport system can not be worse, and people are always in a hurry. But, it's a very lively city! It is the NYC of South America; the city that never sleeps.

What characterises Argentines is their good humour, openness and their want to socialise. They are quite good companions and they always lend a hand. It's something that defines us: we like to share and give to others.

I would recommend it for those who are active, energetic and fun, as well as those who like parties and making friends. You shouldn't judge Argentina because everything can happen here, even the most unusual things! Buenos Aires never stops!

What is the student life like in Buenos Aires?

Buenos Aires is home to countless students from Argentina, as well as many foreigners from South America. There are always trips and things to do, and I think there is plenty of help for all those who are considering coming to Buenos Aires.

How much does it cost to live in Buenos Aires?

It is the most expensive city in Argentina and compared to capital cities of other countries, it is much more expensive. That's a bad thing for those who want to travel, live, and have a limited money.

Did you have any trouble finding accommodation in Buenos Aires? Can you give any advice about finding accommodation?

There are plenty of places to sleep, from family houses, to residences, or buildings that are solely rented out to students. A tip is to always try to live in the downtown neighbourhoods, not only for safety, but these areas are better for transportation too, even if they are expensive.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is excellent. Argentina is known for having the famous "asado" (barbecue), "dulce de leche" (which is better than the Nutella) and the "chipá" (a small, baked cheese flavoured bread roll). Each province also has its own typical dish. I'll certainly keep choosing the asado, it's a reason to get together with family and friends!

And what about eating in Buenos Aires? Can you name your favorite places?

Depending on the type of food you want to eat, Buenos Aires is known for having a lot of restaurants to choose from, with lots of great variety. It is also possible to find good prices. The best restaurants are in Palermo or in the neighbourhood of Las Cañitas.

For example:

  • Tea Connection
  • La Dorita
  • Mala Cara
  • Filo

Where would you recommend to go out to party in Buenos Aires?

El Alamo is an Irish bar which is always full of foreign people. Others I'd recommend are Rosebar, Modena and Tequila. There is an endless offer of parties in Buenos Aires. There are parties from Monday to Monday. The pub crawls are also very good.

Is there any advice you want to give to future students in Buenos Aires?

Take care of your belongings - don't think you're in Europe! On public transport, try not to take out your cell phone and keep your backpacks with you, etc. Don't walk alone at night, even if you are a man. If possible, take a taxi at night. More than anything, take security seriously and after that it will be incredible!
