What is it like to live in Budapest? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Budapest is a city for everybody! A city where an art maniac can find hundreds of museums and fantastic architecture (just an example: Andrássy street, part of the World Heritage).

It's a city where a new generation hipster can find the best markets, boutiques (Szputnyik shop).

A city where the biggest party people can find the best clubs (Szimpla: all day all night perfect place) with cheap stuff including beer, Hungarian spirit (Pálinka and Unicum szilva: must-have things in my country) and perfect street food (lángos).

I could continue this list for ever and ever, but I will let everybody find something for his/herself in my amazing city! After this you can find it out whether I recommend it to live here or not; ).

What is the student lifestyle like in Budapest?

I am a countryside girl who moved to Budapest for the studying. I was amazed how this city is like in daylight and in the night.

During the daylight Budapest is a place for studying, having new experiences with amazingly interesting (and difficult) Hungarian language, and fantastic food!

In the night Budapest turns into an amusement park: lights, music, pálinka and people everywhere hanging around with friends. Party hard or just a chill night with perfect Hungarian wines (Tokaji), you can have it all :).

How much does it cost to live in Budapest?

Budapest is cheap. A beer in a supermarket is app. HUF200 (€0, 60); in a bar in the center it is app. HUF350-500 (€1-1, 5) Food is affordable in restaurants and in supermarkets also.

If you are a student, you can have the monthly ticket for all the public transport for an extremely cheap price (HUF3500= €12). Student dorms are much cheaper than renting a flat or room, but you can find pretty good rooms also in the center, price is between €200-250/month.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Budapest? Is there any advice you can give?

Question have been answered above.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Hungarian cousine is fantastic. The only thing is that it has really heavy dishes (like lángos: I am still in love with this food).

My favourites:

  • Töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage)
  • Source:

  • Hortobágyi pancakes with meat (my granny prepares it like heaven)
  • Túrós palacsinta (sweet pancakes with Hungarian cottage cheese, don't be afraid it is not cheese at all, we just don't have any other word for this in English)
  • Triple choc pilóta keksz (much better than oreo, believe me)
  • Gulash soup (GULYÁS: not what you can have in Germany and Austria).

What places would you recommend visiting in Budapest?

I am a kind of tourist guide in Budapest, so:

  • Heroes Square (Hősök tere)
  • Source:

  • Landscape from Gellért Hill
  • Parliament (take a look at it in the night too)
  • Jewish area (synagogue) in the night
  • Deák square
  • Váci street (be careful this is a street for just foreigners, the prices are double, and the restaurants are not that "traditional".

Is it good to eat out in Budapest? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

  • Champs (sport pub and restaurant)
  • Vörös postakocsi
  • Korhely
  • Kisharang restaurant (small, but really tradicional).

Is the nightlife good in Budapest? Where is good to go?

There are no proper words for this: amazing, exciting, fascinating, etc. :) Jewish area, Morrison's 2, Szimpla pub, Fogas kert/fogas ház.

What advice would you give future students heading to Budapest?

Come as soon as possible!
