What is it like to live in Budapest? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I highly recommend!

How much does it cost to live in Budapest?

Usually people coming from western Europe think that Budapest is much cheaper than their homeland. But i think it is not true anymore. Eg in the city centre the accomodation costs as much as in lots of european countries.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Budapest? Is there any advice you can give?

It is better to find a flatmate because lot of flats has more bedrooms. It is not easy to find something suitable for 1 person. But lots of large flats contains 4-5 bedrooms and you have to share the bathroom with 5-6 other students. So i recommend to look for medium size apartments with 2-3 bedrooms.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

You can not stay hungry in Budapest! Lots of streetfood possibilities or self service restaurants also available. But if sou need an even cheaper solution you can order your weekly menu via internet and they take it to the uni at lunch time or to your home every morning. It is a large business in Budapest eg. E-food, foodexpress, gastroyal etc...

What places would you recommend visiting in Budapest?

Concerts in Müpa, ballet in the Opera, walking trips in the mountains of Buda.

What advice would you give future students heading to Budapest?

Accomodation has to be chosen very carefully! Districts of Budapest are very different and not all of them is recommended. Eg totally avoid 8th district, 6th, 7th and 9th district is partially OK, but it is advantageous to take some advice from the locals. The condition of the buildings can cause some surprises and not everyone is keen on passing along drunken tourist cohorts every night. It can be said that only the 5th district can be recommended to newcomers who does not have any local experience.
