What is it like to live in Budapest? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I have lived in Budapest since age 18. I love this city because, if you live here, you never get bored. There are a lot of experiences to explore. The Danube is the famous Budapest river. The riverside is so beautiful, especially during the night. If you visit Budapest you must go to see:

  • The Parlament (which is the second biggest in Europe)
  • Castle of Buda
  • Margaret Island (with the musical fontana)
  • Heroes Square
  • These ara just some of the popular sights.

The city is always alive. During the night you can explore some small gastropub, where you can eat and drink at the same time. There are big clubs as well, where you can meet a bunch of people from other countries. If you like museums and theatres you can enjoy this part of the city too.

What is the student lifestyle like in Budapest?

Students like partying very much in Budapest. If you are an Erasmus student or just a Hungarian student, I am sure you will always have somewhere to go partying; even if it's Monday, it's not a problem.

How much does it cost to live in Budapest?

Life here is not too expensive compared to other cities in Europe. For example, the monthly public transport ticket is about 11 €, you can rent a whole two rooms flat for about 260 € or, in the city centre, you can get a room for about 160 €. The food is also pretty cheap, there are small restaurants where can you eat a menu for around 3-4 € (soup, main course and dessert). About alcohol: You can buy a bottle of wine for 2, 5 € in supermarkets and it isn't bad. Shots are about 3 €. I think all in all life is cheap in Budapest.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Budapest? Is there any advice you can give?

Nowadays I think it's more difficult than two years ago, but it isn't impossible. It depends on the price and the district. You can find groups on Facebook like "Erasmus Budapest", where you can get all the neccessary information and, if you have any question, you can ask there.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Hungarian food is amazing: I really like it, but maybe I am a little bit partial. Hungarian food is spicy and sometimes very hot. Typical Hungarian dishes are:

  • Újházi chichken soup
  • Goulash
  • Cabbage roll
  • Chicken stew
  • Chimney cake
  • Pancakes
  • Gerbaud
  • Ischlers

If you don't enjoy Hungarian food, however, you can find Chinese restaurants, Italian restaurants, small coffeeshops with delicious sandwiches and cakes and so on.
