What is it like to live in Budapest? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I moved out of the city (and the country) 6 years ago but I used to live there for 10 years. I went back for a short visit this summer (with my partner) and wasn't disappointed! The capital of Hungary has improved quite a lot and is still affordable. Public transport is excellent and rather cheap for students as you get 50% off! Locals are very friendly so I'm sure they'll be quite pleased to show you all the good places. :)

What is the student lifestyle like in Budapest?

From what I heard, there are lots of Erasmus parties!

How much does it cost to live in Budapest?

Can't be too much, especially compared to Western European capitals.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Budapest? Is there any advice you can give?

You might want to try CouchSurfing.org or Facebook. When I was younger, host families were quite common, not sure how it works these days, though.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food is amazing! Go to Vásárcsarnok and you won't be disappointed. :)
My favourite dishes are stuffed cabbage rolls (töltött káposzta) and somló sponge cake (somlói galuska). Don't move to Hungary if you want to lose weight! :P

What places would you recommend visiting in Budapest?

Try to go for a walk on the riverbank. You can get a great view of the city on Gellért Hill at night.

Is it good to eat out in Budapest? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Főzelékfaló Ételbár is definitely worth a try - it's basically a place where you can eat Hungarian "fast food" homemade style!

Is the nightlife good in Budapest? Where is good to go?

Try to ruin pubs (romkocsma), you won't be disappointed. I also like Sky Bar on Corvin tető.

What advice would you give future students heading to Budapest?

Try to make friends with the locals, they will definitely speak English (or even German)!
