Erasmus Experiencia en Budapest, Hungary by Borja
Why did you choose to go to Budapest, Hungary?
I wanted to go to a big city, where I could study English, which was cheap and good fun.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
10 months, €430 a month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Budapest?
It's really good, my university was one of the smallest ones, but they often organised gatherings and parties.
Would you recommend the city or the university of Budapest to other students?
Yes!
What is the food like there?
Well, don't expect anything too refined, goulash is a really good typical dish. Apart from that, it's basically just meat with different dressings and garnishes, but, in general, it's really tasty.
How did you find your accommodation there?
I went through the streets and to an estate agency.
How much does accommodation cost? What are the prices there like in general?
You need €150-350 a month to live and the prices, in general, are noticeably cheaper than in Spain.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I learned 4 words in Hungarian to get by with, the majority of people there speak perfect English and you won't normally have a problem with it. My university was in English, and I went on two English for Business courses, they were really useful.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Budapest from your city?
Well, take a flight from Tenerife to Madrid and then a flight with Wizzair, a low cost airline. There are also direct flights, but they're very expensive.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Budapest?
- Monday: Morrisons1
- Tuesday: Morrisons2
- Wednesday: Corvinteto
- Thursday, Friday, Saturday, whatever, go to: Buda Río, Play, White Angel, Stufio, Dokk Beach if you're looking for a big club and then Living Room, West Balcan, Godorr for something more alternative.
And to eat in Budapest? What are some of your favourite places to go?
Well, the three typical restaurants that I used to go to were Kiado and two others, whose names I don't remember... but they were in the area of the opera house, one was on the other side of the avenue and the other was near Dessewffy.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
There are quite a lot of museums and things to visit. To be honest, I didn't visit any of them, but the best ones seem to be in the Heroes Square and the Buda castle.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Budapest in the future?
Don't just go out in the same place and... enjoy travelling there, it's amazing.
