Erasmus Experience in Budapest, Hungary by Lux

Why did you choose to go to Budapest, Hungary?

I looked for somewhere to go that was affordable and that was a capital city so that it would have good air travel links. Besides, it's in a good location from which you can easily travel around Europe.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

My stay is for 10 months, but I only get funding for 5 of them. I get €200 a month, so I get €1, 000 in total. That amount doesn't really pay for much. You have to pay for your stay there yourself.

What is the student lifestyle like in Budapest?

It's really good. There are actually a lot of Erasmus students, lots of students and lots of people from all over the world. There are lots of different pubs, clubs and things to do there, so you'll never have a dull moment.

Would you recommend the city and the university of Budapest to other students?

Of course, it was the best choice I could've made. I think it's a perfect city for your Erasmus experience.

What is the food like there?

Well, it's pretty good. Although they like spicy things too much. At any rate, you'll end up what you normally buy in your home country, well I did at least...

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Budapest?

I found it really easily, but I got lucky. I found it through people I knew.

How much does it cost to live in Budapest?

Around €450-500 to live comfortably. The supermarket is quite expensive...

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?

It's impossible, and given how difficult it is and how little time I was staying there, I decided to concentrate on learning English.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Budapest from your home city?

By plane. You can find super cheap flights on certain dates. It's just a question of looking around. My return flight for Christmas from Malaga cost €200 with check-in.

Do you have any advice for students coming to Budapest?

Don't stop doing things, sign up for anything that appeals to you. Even if you end up exhausted at the end of every week. Time flies and this is an incredible experience. You have to try to live it to the fullest in the little time that you have there. So don't just stay at home.
