Erasmus Experience in Budapest, Hungary by Jonne
Why did you choose to go to Budapest, Hungary?
Been there before. It's amazing: the architecture, the nightlife, the prices.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship is typically for 4 months in a semester. The amount of money depends on your home country and grant type.
What is the student lifestyle like in Budapest?
It's amazing, everyone is very close and you keep meeting different people from everywhere around the world.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Budapest to other students?
Most definitely.
What is the food like?
The typical Hungarian food contains a lot of meat and can be good. Supermarket food is not amazing and the bread is kind of dry at most places.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Budapest?
A little effort on Facebook pages.
How much does it cost to live in Budapest?
200-300 euro a month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
You don't have to learn Hungarian, but learning a few words even is useful. There is a nice language course available at the university. Hungarian has easy grammar, but long words and they are tough to pronounce. The language is mostly like Finnish, and not really any other language...
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Budapest from your city?
By plane, most definitively.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Budapest?
Pfff, so many things to do. Bars, ruinpubs, massive clubs, massive ruinpubs, karaoke places. Some names: Szimpla Kert, Morrison's Opera, Cheers Pub, Kuplung Bar, Morrison's 2, Instant, Fogas Ház, Anker't, Kraft, hellobaby.
Szimpla Kert
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Budapest?
Mazel Tov is a very nice restaurant. I loved Zeller Bistro. Some cheap places would be Fritzi's Bistro or Uj-Haz Vendeglo. And for the rest of the restaurants I advice to check Tripadvisor.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
- Heroes Square
- Szechenyi Thermal Bath
- The Castle
- The Citadel
- Deák Ferenc Ter
- Sirius Teaház
- The Central Market
- Vaci Utca
