Erasmus Experience in Budapest, Hungary by Elena
Why did you choose to go to Budapest, Hungary?
Because it's in the middle of Europe and it is easier to travel to other countries. Besides it's a beautiful city.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I'll be in Budapest for five months and I should receive 300 euro per month (but I'm still waiting for the money to come).
What is the student lifestyle like in Budapest?
Non-stop! We always have something to do, there are always events, concerts, trips... so you will enjoy.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Budapest to other students?
Yes, I recommend it. It's great.
What is the food like?
Hm, I don't like that much, I prefer Spanish food really, but it's ok. You won't find good fish but you will find too much meat and potatoes in your plates.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Budapest?
Yes, it was hard for me.
How much does it cost to live in Budapest?
Around 400 euro per month, flat included.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Ha ha no, absolutely no. Hungarian is a very difficult language; you will need time to learn it. Yes, they provide some courses if we wanted.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Budapest from your city?
By airplane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Budapest?
Szimpla, Hello Baby, Instant, Fogashaz... there are many pubs and clubs you can choose from.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Budapest?
Frizzy Papa has two plates I love: chicken with paprika and another with beef. It's very cheap and you eat well.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
You should see the main attractions such as the Parliament, the part of Buda (and all things you will find there), the Basilica, Deak Ferenk, Vorosmarty, Vaci Utca, Hero's square and the park that it's behind it, and bath terms.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Budapest in the future?
Yes. People usually say that Budapest is very cheap. Okay, Hungary is cheap but Budapest is the capital so the prices are normal. It's not expensive but it's not also that cheap (except beer that it´s very cheap I think and other little things).
People usually say that Budapest is very cold. Okay it's cold but we are in December and the minimum degree has been -1 maybe -2, but not -15, -20 as I heard before coming here.
