Erasmus Experience in Bremen, Germany by Angie
Why did you choose to go to Bremen, Germany?
A friend of mine recommended me this beautiful city, and it is perfect for me because I live in a big cosmopolitan city back in Mexico and I was tired of the traffic and too many people.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
In my case I didn't receive anything from my university or government, my parents helped me with all the living costs.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bremen?
It is pretty good, there are students that are in charge of organizing all the Erasmus parties, and also there are different pubs, nightclubs, coffee shops. If you are a runner or fit there is a park or gyms where you can go and exercise. Everything is close by tram, you move faster from a place to another.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bremen to other students?
Of course, I liked that there are students from all the world so you would have the time of your life. Bremen is a good city if you want to travel because is near Hamburg and you can take the train or airplane to travel.
What is the food like?
For me, it was expensive to go out for dinner, but there are many options to eat in restaurants. I ate a lot of kebabs because they are delicious and cheap. Supermarkets are good. I recommend going to Penny that is the cheapest one.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Bremen?
No, the university offered me some options and I just emailed them and in one week I had already accommodation. But you need to do it with anticipation.
How much does it cost to live in Bremen?
My parents sent me 675€ per month for living. And it was good because beer it is really cheap and if you've wanted to go out, toca night clubs it is free some days with your student ID. So if you know how to manage your money you will be fine.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
At first I struggle with the German language in stores but in the uni everyone speaks English, so it is easy to communicate. All my courses were in English.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Bremen from your city?
There is no economical way because I'm from Mexico and it is really expensive, but if someone is from Mexico I would say to fly from Cancun- Frankfurt- Bremen.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bremen?
Of course, there are many places to go out and dance, drink and have fun. Like I said before, there is a place for everyone.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Bremen?
I would say kebabs and bratwurst.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Bürgerpark, schnoor, Weser River, stadium, just walking downtown is beautiful.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Bremen in the future?
Make sure to know the person with who you are going to live with, and check the comments from other students who had lived there. You will love Bremen, that's for sure.
