Giovanni's Erasmus Experience in Bordeaux, France
Why did you decide to go to Bordeaux, France?
Because it was the only French destination available to me.
How long did your grant last? How much did you receive?
9 months. €280 per month.
How was the university atmosphere in Bordeaux?
Very crowded. There are so many French students and lots of foreign students too.
Would you recommend Bordeaux city and university to other students?
Yes, if they are searching for fun close to home.
What is the country's food like?
Not great.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Bordeaux?
No. There are lots of accommodation offers in the centre but they are expensive. The CAF provides financial support.
How much does it cost to live in Bordeaux?
Between €600 and €700 per month if you are not living in the university campus. This costs a lot less- about €300 per month.
How was the language? Did you attend any university courses?
There are free courses available with Erasmus. It is quick to learn the language.
What is the cheapest way to get to Bordeaux from your city?
Flying with Volotea or Ryanair.
Where do you recommend going out in the evening in Bordeaux?
La Plage (club), The Cock and Bull (British pub).
And to eat in Bordeaux? What are your favourite places?
Nowhere.
And what do you recommend visiting?
The ancient doors of the historic centre.
Do you have any recommendations for future students of Bordeaux?
Living on campus costs much less than living in the centre; in fact instead of paying €500-700 I only pay €241 per month, which with the help of the CAF becomes €149. To get campus accommodation you need to apply online, the same with applying for CAF support; it is better to do these things before you begin your mobility in order to have an advantage.
French bureaucracy is more complicated than that in Italy; you need to open a French bank account to have access to lots of things (it's not just convenient, it's obligatory). By opening an account with Societé Genérale you will receive about €50+30 in your account, without fees. The annual student membership costs €210, which pays for itself in 71 days (a ticket for one hour is about €1.50).
