Erasmus Experience in Bordeaux, France by Alejandro

Why did you choose to go to Bordeaux, France?

It seemed like a beautiful city to me, well known and it wasn't very far away from Spain. It's also in the south of France, for which there are many cities to visit very close by.

How long is the scholarship for? How much money do you receive as aid?

In my case, 9 months. The EU paid me 5 months (€1, 500 in total) and the Andalucia Council, 9 months (almost €2000 in total).

How is student life in Bordeaux?

Great. Truthfully, it really surprised me the amount of students that could come to take this city.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Bordeaux to other students?

Without a doubt. The city is beautiful and there is always a great atmosphere. In terms of the university, I was at Bordeaux Montaigne (the arts one) and and it was very good. I haven't heard anything bad about the others either. The Science Po is very well known. It has a lot of students.

How is the country's food?

I have nothing to say about French food. Everyone knows it's very good.

Did you find it difficult to find accommodation in Bordeaux?

I was very lucky because the CROUS granted with me a T5 student hall next to my university. However yes, it isn't at all easy; not in Bordeaux, nor in other places.

How much does it cost to live in Bordeaux?

This question can have many connotations but of course, more expensive than in Spain. Personally from between the student hall (somewhat more than €300 a week) and food, etc., it could come to €500 a month approximately.

How is the language? Did you go to any courses at the University?

I already had an acceptable level of French so I decided not to do a course. Truthfully, for me it wasn't bad. It didn't seem too difficult to me. You also have to consider that I study translation. This affects it.

What is the most economical way of getting to Bordeaux from your city?

Since I'm from Cordoba, what's cheapest is to go to Seville (or Malaga) and catch a direct flight. However, these direct flights don't exist during Christmas and it works out cheaper on a coach to Madrid (€100 return).

Which places would you recommend to go out to party in Bordeaux?

La Plage is the best known club. It was 7 completely different rooms in terms of music and decoration, being one of the biggest in Europe. For the others, it depends on each weekend. It's always good to inform yourself on the Facebook groups.

And to eat in Bordeaux? Can you name your favourite places?

Sincerely, I didn't go normally out to eat a lot due to the cost. However 'L'Entrecôte' is very well known; a traditional restaurant for its rib steak they make with a secret sauce. I believe the set menu (without a drink) cost around €24.

And as a cultural visit?

The entire city in itself. La Place de la Bourse, le Grand Théâtre, la Porte Cailhou, le Pont de Pierre... It's a city that wins your heart.

Any advice you want to give to future students in Bordeaux?

Make the most of every second in Bordeaux! It's a city that mustn't be missed and that has quite a good climate for being French.
