Erasmus Experience in Bonn, Germany by Amanda

What is it like to live in Bonn? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It's a very pretty city. I really like it there, they've made it easy to get around by bike, although you can get anywhere using the public transport. If you're studying at the university and you have a student pass, you don't usually have to pay for transport, but be careful if you don't have it, there are a lot of ticket inspectors and I'm sure that they'll catch you at some point. And they have no sympathy.

It's very studenty city, although the general atmosphere is more low-key and there's not that much partying, but you'll learn as you go along where to go and where to go on nights out, or more often than not you'll usually just go to house parties and parties in the residences.

In general, it's not that expensive, it's cheaper to live here than in Madrid. If you need to save money, you can get by on €100 or a bit less a month without going hungry or having to give up beer (obviously not counting how much your flat, transport or other basic things will cost).

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Bonn? Can you offer any advice?

The Studenten-Werk sorts it all out for you, at least if you have an Erasmus agreement then you don't have to worry about it at all, you just have to fill out the paperwork and hope that they put you in a good residence.

What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?

It's not bad actually, although they cook with a lot of cucumber. Their meat stews are pretty good. And make sure that they give you a lot of sauce with your currywurst.

The food from the university canteen isn't bad, and the student menu is very cheap.
