My experience in Besançon, France by Melissa

How did you find living in Besançon? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

To live in Besançon, you have to like quiet cities and say goodbye to the sun because it rains a lot. The student parties aren't as lively as in bigger cities in France and there are only two main nightclubs. There are lots of bars with a nice atmosphere. I had completed the second year of my bachelors before I came to Besançon (I did the third year on Erasmus) and I didn't think about continuing my studies in the city after that year.

What is student life like in Besançon?

The students form a group and there are organised activities.

What is the cost of living like in Besançon?

The cost of living has steadily increased over the last three years. But we are still in the economic crisis and the tram lines are still under construction.

Was is hard to find accommodation in Besançon? Any advice?

I didn't have any problems finding accommodation within my budget (250/200€) but I think luck also had something to do with it. You could look months in advance or at the last minute and still not find anything. My advice? Look at the adverts at uni and on the website CRIJ. Also sign up to agencies (but beware of agency fees that can sometimes be high! )

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The local delicacies are comté (cheese) and wine. If you like these things then you're in for a treat! They also have tartiflette and croissants...don't hesitate to eat out to get a real taste of French food.

Where do you recommend visiting in Besançon?

The citadel, the national gallery, events organised at La Rodia and student nights at the Famous Club (formally known as "La 8ème avenue". The best nights are organised by the Staps à la Mez.

And for food? Where are your favourite places?

La Mez, le Famous Club (formally known as 8ème Avenue), le Pouchkine, le Building, l'iguana and le Cousty.

Any advice for future students in Besançon?

Good luck and have a great time!
