Experience in Bellingham, United States by Jonathan

What is it like to live in Bellingham? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city has many people who are the back to earth kind of people, many who ride bikes. The food is really fresh and we have a Farmer's Market that runs year round. Even for being as big as Bellingham is we have probably more local stores of every kind than we do big chain.
The biggest problem is now the traffic, huge growth recently and just the pains that come with it.
The weather takes a lot of getting used to, we are the cloudiest city in the USA (above 50,000 people) but absolutely beautiful landscape near by with lots of outdoor activities.

What is the student lifestyle like in Bellingham?

I have heard only good things about the colleges and University here. I love my college here (Whatcom). Lots to do and many clubs, though there is a very big theme that is very... back to nature in more than one way.

How much does it cost to live in Bellingham?

Expensive for a city of it's size. We have all of the Canadians that come down and buy our things making them more expensive. Though Bellingham is cheap for what you can get in Seattle. And just about every place on the coast and in Washington State in general is kind of expensive.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bellingham? Is there any advice you can give?

I live 30 minutes out side of Bellingham, though I know a good many people who have found a place to live, there is only one area I wouldn't live in, but the rest of Bellingham is nice but figure about 700 to 900 a month for an apartment (single).

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

We have every type of food, we have asian food, we have Polish, Greek, Chinese, local Fish and Chips, Vietnamese, and many many other types of foods, for a city it's size and everyone so local and diverse, we have many types of foods to fit almost anyone's preference.

What places would you recommend visiting in Bellingham?

Chuckanut drive (in the top 10 most beautiful roads in the USA), Larabee state park,Whatcom falls park, Mount Baker ski area (hour out of town) and countless parks and trails if you love to hike or ride your bike. As for activities in town? I can't help you too much, I can't afford to do much.

Is it good to eat out in Bellingham? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

I think the food is great. My top two favorite spots are Magdalina's and the Food Co-op. The first one is a Polish restaurant and the Co-op has excellent soups, local ice cream, and other local foods that are the freshest you can get.

Is the nightlife good in Bellingham? Where is good to go?

Too busy for this, school and my home projects. I don't have much to say aside from you can probably find a party every night if you know where to go and I hear of a few bars that have good local and micro brews.

What advice would you give future students heading to Bellingham?

Be open to just about anything you can think of. Bellingham is so strange that you see people choosing to not wear shoes around town and anything weird elsewhere is normal here because everyone is so open and very... hippie at times. We just have all types.
