What is this about?

An old industrial village, an abandoned paradise!

View to the old transports terminal - August 2016.

The Mines of Saint Domingos is a little village that belongs to the district of Beja, it used to be known for its great miner blaze, and today is a nice place where you can go to rest or to learn more about the Industrial Architecture.

Also, the Romans and the Carthaginians had some mining explorations of gold, copper and silver in this spot, but was with important English investigators that this place was put on the map. The village grow up thanks to the economical business. The populated part, still today, is compost by small and short houses, that was where the miners used to live during the working week, sometimes with or without the family, so they could be closer from work.

Nowadays, it's still possible to see the remains of the abandoned complex from the 60s. There are a lot of activities that you can do like: tour guides, bike riding, visit museums...

Another element that belongs to the old Fabric - August 2016.

Close by there is a beautiful fluvial beach, it's called Fluvial Beach of "Tapada Grande" and is without a doubt one of my favourite fluvial beaches so far. It's a space in the middle of the nature made of rusticity. In here you can see families having fun, having picnics, playing games and enjoying their time.

The water quality is excellent - the beach has a blue flag - and the space is in real good conditions. In this place there is also a restaurant and a support office. The water temperature is warm and really invites you to have a bath. The lagoon is not that deep, so it's perfect for people of all ages.

How to arrive?

The best way to arrive to the Mines of Saint Domingos is by travelling with your own car. The Mines of Saint Domingos are located in the county of Mértola. From Mértola, the road is really easy to take, but if you need anything, you can ask a local - and his/her approach will be really nice.

When to visit?

It's good for visiting during all year, however, it's better to avoid it during the coldest and rainy season because almost all its attractions are outdoor activities. The paths are marked and there are different information for the tourists to read. During the path you will also discover the several ruins that exist.

During the Summer it's possible to see this view while you're diving by the water, which is a great feeling in the warmest days. A unique space in Alentejo perfect for a weekend getaway.

How much?

The visit is free. There are payed tour guides to the famous Miner's House. The area isn't expensive and invites you to stop in the local typical restaurants.

Final Considerations:

In this place you can learn a lot about the industrial history of this region, it has its own charm and doesn't disappoint its visitors. When I visited it in August 2016, it was a really warm day, and a bit stuffy. The fluvial beach has a high quality and is much more calm that any other beach in Algarve. A haven, a retreat!
