10 things to do in Bath

If I was asked which city in the United Kingdom was the most beautiful, I would say Bath without a moment’s hesitation. With its impressive abbey, extraordinary Roman baths, and iconic limestone buildings, this Somerset town is an absolute treat to visit, and perfectly located if you want to get a couple of day trips in while you’re there. You’ll have no problem finding things to occupy your time with, but if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration, here are ten activities to get you started.

10 things to do in Bath

Visit the Roman Baths

It would be sin to go to Bath without visiting the monument that gave the city its name! The Roman Baths complex is incredibly well-preserved, and, although not cheap to enter, is well worth a visit. Wander through the various changing areas, saunas, and plunge pool rooms, before marvelling at the murky green water in which our ancient ancestors used to swim to cool off afterwards. Make sure, also, to try some of Bath’s famous spa water. It’s got a pretty pungent taste – much like sulphur – but is supposed to have amazing healing properties.

Relax at the Thermae Bath Spa

Want to have a spa experience of your own? Book a session at the Thermae Bath Spa, and enjoy bathing in natural thermal water. Relax your muscles in one of the steam rooms on site, then plunge into the open-air rooftop pool, where you’ll have fantastic views of the city below. If you’re feeling extra indulgent, why not also spoil yourself with a massage or other spa treatment?

Attend a service in Bath Abbey

Bath Abbey is another of the city’s must-see monuments, with its stunning vaults and stained glass windows. If you have time, why not attend a service inside this house of worship? Even if you’re not a believer, you’ll be sure to enjoy to soak in the peaceful atmosphere of the place, while listening to some fantastic choral music. Got too much to do? Do a quick circuit of the abbey's exterior to see its magnificent flying buttresses, as well as all the sculptures that adorn its west front.

10 things to do in Bath

Visit the Royal Crescent and the Circus

Bath is full of beautiful architecture, but if you want to be positively surrounded by its limestone buildings, head to either the Royal Crescent or the Circus.

Admire the terrace houses of the first landmark from the grassy Royal Victoria Park, then, if you're hungry for more, stroll down Brock Street to see the second.

See Pulteney Bridge

Another unmissable monument is Pulteney Bridge, an arched limestone bridge lined, on both sides, with shops and cafés. Cross the structure on foot, or see it from one of the banks of the River Avon.

Walk along the river

While you’re there, why not take a stroll along the water’s edge? Admire the Pulteney Weir, just next to the bridge, then wander as far as you fancy. You’ll find many colourful canal boats along the way, as well as a number of observation points, from which you'll be able see some the city’s key landmarks. Too tired to walk? Enjoy a scenic river cruise instead!

Go to a museum

If the weather’s not so great – even in the height of summer, you never know quite what to expect! – shelter from the rain in one of Bath’s many museums or art galleries. The Fashion Museum is a particular favourite of mine: here, you’ll find items of clothing dating back to the eighteenth century, and will get the chance to try on replicas!

More of a book worm? Head to the Jane Austen Centre, and find out the significance of Bath in this famous author’s life. In the mood for some art? The Holburne Museum and the Victoria Art Gallery are there to satisfy your every need!

Try a Bath bun

If you're a bit of a foodie, or even if you're just down to try a new and delicious delicacy, pop into Sally Lunn’s (situated in the oldest house in the city), and sample an authentic Bath bun. These large but airy bread rolls come with both sweet and savoury fillings, and are popular among tourists and locals alike. Want to know how these treats are made? Head downstairs to the small museum, where you’ll be able to see the establishment’s original kitchens.

10 things to do in Bath

Visit the Iford Manor Estate

Want to explore the surrounding area a bit? Head to the Iford Manor Estate, located just a short drive or train ride from Bath’s city centre. Open between April and October, this old manor house, with its stunning Italianate garden, is the perfect place to spend a summer’s afternoon. Enjoy an afternoon snack in the tearoom, then get lost among the plants. You’ll stumble across all sorts of hidden delights, from cloisters, to summer houses, to ancient statues.

Go on a day trip

If you’re willing to venture further afield, Bath is within a stone's throw of many of the UK’s other popular tourist destinations. Hop on a train, and in under two hours, you could be in Bristol, Oxford, London, or even Cardiff. Also easily accessible is the world-famous Stonehenge, which now has an excellent visitor centre to explore.
