Experience in Bangkok, Thailand by Kinza
What is it like to live in Bangkok? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Bangkok is something you would desperately want at least once in a lifetime. The massive city is one of the most visited places by tourists. It is a perfect destination for people seeking fun, internship experience, attachment with your inner self and so much more. It is not only a place where you can relax, it is in fact a place that would give you love, care, kindness, tears, friendships, relationships, maturity and most importantly, freedom. It is rightly called the city of angels in the land of smiles.
How much does it cost to live in Bangkok?
It is extremely cheap to live in Bangkok, finding a nice and comfortable studio will cost around 200 USD, you can also find cheaper ones as low as 50 USD! Food is easily available, at almost every stop that you make. A meal at a local food, stall or small restaurant will not cross 2 USD. Eating in a nicer place will cost within 10-20 USD. Travel is a bit hard one, Bangkok is one of the worst places when it comes to traffic. There is a sky train and underground one that cover almost all of Bangkok. Ticket is not too cheap and not too expensive. If you use the train on a moderate use basis 100-200 USD should be enough for a month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bangkok? Is there any advice you can give?
Not difficult at all. People are quite friendly and will help you best to find an accommodation according to your needs. There's a bunch of groups on facebook where expats and local English speaking Thais communicate to exchange information and buy/sell stuff. The biggest ones are:
- Desperately seeking Bangkok.
- Everything Bangkok.
- Buy/Sell/Giveaway Bangkok.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
It's extremely delicious and quite unusual, but not everything is as good. I personally hate the smell of Kafir, lime leaf which is used way too much in Thai cuisine, there are however options available that do not use it. Everything goes with either rice or noodles. It is quite spicy to be honest but you can always ask for the food to be mild by telling them "Mai Phet". People in Bangkok are too non-vegetarian, you will find meat or egg accompanied with almost everything. My favorite and safer dishes are:
- Phad Krapao Kai (Stir fried chicken with basil served with rice)
- Pad Thai (Noodles, almost everyone's favorite)
- Masman Kai (Chicken and potato curry cooked in coconut milk and peanuts, to be eaten with rice)
- Tom Yum Ghoong (Famous sour and spicy shrimp soup with mild essence of lime leaf)
- Som Tum (Spicy papaya salad)
- And of course Thai tea.
What places would you recommend visiting in Bangkok?
- Grand Palace
- Boat ride on Chao Phraya River
- Asiatique, a really nice walking market near the riverside with plenty of restaurants and an excellent place to buy souvenirs.
- Asok, a part place with lots of bars, clubs and tourists.
- Nana same as Asok.
- Central world, shopping heaven.
- Pratunam
- Phahurat
Is it good to eat out in Bangkok? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is really good. I mostly eat out at food stalls with names hard to remember but my few luxury dinings have been at Vertigo Restaurant- Banyan Tree, Zaks in Sukhumvit Soi 11, Holiday Inn, Hemmingway, one of the nice restaurants at Asiatique and a Shawarma stall in Nana Soi 5 run by two Arabic guys.
