Experience in Bangkok, Thailand by Chananya
What is it like to live in Bangkok? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Bangkok, like most other capital cities, it's bustling with big buildings, people, and traffic. Nevertheless, I would say it's packed with both entertainment and cultural attractions for foreigners.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bangkok?
I would say student lifestyle, is convenient if your studying in Bangkok you could travel by the BTS Skytrain, and there's no need to worry about living cost because the meals here are extremely cheap. However, if your studying at the outer area of Bangkok, commute may be a bit more difficult as the Skytrain might not reach your destination.
How much does it cost to live in Bangkok?
Depending on each person lifestyle's and cost, I use approximately THB 25, 000 per month, excluding living expense because most Thais still live with their parents until they get married. So, I don't have the cost of electricity or water, gas bills. For people who needs their own accommodation and meals it would be at THB 35, 000 - 45, 000.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bangkok? Is there any advice you can give?
Bangkok has so many expats working here, there are full of service apartments and place to rent. I recommend a place that's close to the skytrain or walking distant to it, and near your destination. Always check the contract before signing it.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is loved by people around. However, Thai food that are street food may scare newcomers, I think you should be the judge of it looking at the surroundings. Some street food stall are clean some are not. My favorite dish is Tom Kha Kai (Chicken in coconut soup), it's not spicy, and stir fried chicken/meat/pork/squid in garlic.
What places would you recommend visiting in Bangkok?
Wat Prakeaw, is a temple in the middle of Bangkok, a must see place with its history and architecture.
Is it good to eat out in Bangkok? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yeah, of course. My favorite spot is in Sukhumvit - reachable by the BTS, and has a diverse food culture.
Is the nightlife good in Bangkok? Where is good to go?
The nightlife in Bangkok is great as well, expats often visit Khao Sarn area, but around shops like "Route 66" and "RCA" are pretty popular with foreigners as well.
What advice would you give future students heading to Bangkok?
Thais are mostly friendly, I'm sure if you have any trouble you could always ask around. However, Thais are often shy and scared to talk to foreigner, now it's better. So, don't worry if they don't respond you, they probably can't speak English or shy.
