Altenburg

When I put my brother up in Bamberg, we decided to explore together an area that I had not visited yet, and this is how we discovered this little castle.

I read on various tourist guides that Bamberg is nicknamed as the Franconian Rome, since it rises up on seven hills too, and the castle of Altenburg is located on the highest one. In fact, from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the whole city. Unfortunately, the Siciliano's brothers are not exactly the luckiest with the weather: the sky was cloudy during all the week that we spent together, but it did not prevent us from enjoying these sights.

This castle was built in the early XII century, but it has not always been inhabited since it was essentially used as a refuge for the inhabitants in case of attack or need. In these centuries, it became the residence of bishops, a prison and today it is mainly a tourist attraction. Some places have in fact been used as a restaurant.

I thought I should include this place in my diary especially because, according to my brother's opinion, this is the most interesting place that he has visited in Bamberg. Of course, since he is a historian specialized in medieval history, this castle had a great charm on him. However, I also believe that visiting it is definitely a good way to spend few hours outdoors.

As I said previously, this castle is located on top of a hill and can be reached via two paths: one tourist and crowded, the other much more unknown and dirt. The two intrepid brothers have obviously chosen the second, to test the spirit of walking several kilometers almost climbing, but it was worth! At the end of the path, just before you get to the castle, there is this old altar, probably placed there for the pilgrims who, like us, could not wait to get to our destination!

However, although the weather was not the most favorable, we both enjoyed it, thanks to the view and the architecture of the castle!
