What is it like to live in Augsburg? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city is a typical university city. We have a big campus and many different faculties. Augsburg is not a big city, but in my opinion it is the perfect size. It is not too hectic, not too many people, it has many parks and it doesn't take you long to get out of the city and for example to the closeby mountains. It has a relaxed atmosphere with many young people and also the right entertainment for them. I can recommend Augsburg as a student city.

What is the student lifestyle like in Augsburg?

It is a relaxed atmosphere. Students don't just stay in their groups, but mix with students from other faculties. Everyone gets well along with the others. On the campus reigns a joyfull and peacefull atmosphere, maybe that is also because of our nice campus, with many green spaces and possibilities to sit together in a quiet corner to have a coffee or study. We have many sport, theatre and musical offers from the university and people also meet on the campus for extracurricular activities. Of course, there are also many parties. Mostly they are from Thursday until Sunday, some of them even in the university. The city center is easy to reach and has many bars, cafes and clubs.

How much does it cost to live in Augsburg?

Augsburg has average prices. You get an apartment or shared flat room between 200 and 600 euro, depending on your demands. With paying the tuition fees, you will automatically get a semester ticket for the public transportations in Augsburg, so you will only have to pay the night bus. If you participate in the sports offers of the university, it only costs 30 euros per semester for most of them. For food and other stuff, I would estimate about 200 euros per month. Partying and going out, depends a lot on where you go.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Augsburg? Is there any advice you can give?

If you don't have too high demands, you will easily find an appropriate room. It is hard to find accomodation with animals, but anything else should not be a problem. Search on the shared flat sites in the internet or just apply for one of the rooms in the student residencies.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

You will find food from all over the world in Augsburg. Students, who go partying, will go for a kebab in the night, but we also have lots of regional dishes to choose. Regional means Swabian and Bavarian, which is both really good. My favourite dishes are Käsespätzle and Krustenbraten, Knödel and Blaukraut. If you don't know them, you should definitely try! In summer, the best thing is to go to the beergarden, where you get currywurst, Obazda and Weißwürschte and of course beer.

What places would you recommend visiting in Augsburg?

The Augsburger Puppenkiste is a kind of theatre and a absolute must to visit. Apart from that, you should go to see the Fuggerei, the main place in the city centre with the city hall, the fountains in the streets, the Weberhaus, the many churches, the zoo and the botanical garden, the football stadium, the Mozart house, the MAN museum, Zeughaus, Maximilianmuseum, Riegele beer museum and going for long walks in the parks or at the river Lech. In spring and autumn, you should go to the traditional Ausgburger Plärrer, which is kind of a small Oktoberfest, with roaller coasters, attractions, traditional food, sweets and a lot of beer. Most of the Augsburger and surroundings visitors will come in Dirndl and Lederhosen. It is something not to be missed!

Is it good to eat out in Augsburg? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

As the prices in Augsburg are not too high, of course depending on your demands and choices, it is affordable to eat out. In summer, I would really recommend all the beer gardens, because the atmosphere is great. For having something small or a coffee, best thing is to go to one of the cafes int the Maximilianstraße or the Rathausplatz. If you want something different, I would recommend the Running Sushi (japanese) in the City Gallery, the Sausalitos (mexican), the Corner Bar (irish) the Weiße Lamm, the Steakmanufaktur or Azsteakas (for meat lovers) and for traditional food the Berghof, the Bayrisches Haus am Dom, the Bärenkeller, the Drei Mohren and the Bosnaimbissstube, where you will get the traditional Bosna of Augsburg.

Is the nightlife good in Augsburg? Where is good to go?

Nightlife in Augsburg is for everyone. There are lots of cocktailbars, some of them also with dance floors, in the Maximilian street, which is kind of the Party street of Augsburg. There you will find the Peaches, the Capi Bar, again the Sausalitos, the Mamo Lounge, the Mahagoni bar, the Barfly and the Capitol.

In another corner you will find the Weiße Lamm, the Schwarze Schaf, the Cornern Bar, the Soho Stage, or the Murphys Law for having a drink and afterwards heading to the clubs. Best is the Kesselhaus, especially when they have the 90s party. Other recommendations are the Kantine, KKlub, Lagerhalle, the Prisma, the Rockfabrik (short Rofa) and further away the PM. Also Munich is not far away for partying. Even at the University, we have parties at the campus. The best known are the Semester Opening Parties from the ASTA twice a year and the Juristenparty.

What advice would you give future students heading to Augsburg?

Try to experience as much as possible from the bavarian/swabian culture and also discover the surroundings of Augsburg, with lots of choices like Munich, Landsberg, the Alps and its castles, Andechs and in general the regions of the lakes Starnberg and Ammersee. Enjoy the city and the relaxed university atmospehere.
