One of the highlights for tourists in Ireland is the 6th-century cloister Clonmacnoise founded by St Ciaran. Having its peak in the 12th century, the areal was raided and burned several times by Vikings. The cloister ruins are still worth a visit! It's really remote though so you would have to take a taxi or rely on friendly locals to help you out.
Entering the areal, a small winded path leads you through a forest of high crosses (probably a graveyard, but don't be spooked ... there are no ghosts as the legends try to tell you!)
The main church lies in ruins now after all the attacks that happened throughout history: In 1552, the English reached also this remote place, and although the inhabitants managed to defend themselves for some time, they were defeated and the site razed. This is a shockingly recurring motive in Irish history ... never forget!
The inside of the church lets you see throught the small windows ... it feel as if eyes of light were staring at you!
Further highlights are the Cross of the Scriptures which depicts Biblical scenes and the usual Round Tower used for defensive purposes. Plus, this evocative photo with its lighting may well be one of my best from Ireland. Stay tuned for my next posts!
