Erasmus Experience in Angers, France by Nicol
Why did you choose to go to Angers, France?
I had been studying French for 6 years and I wanted to improve my language skills, know French culture and widen my knowledge. I chose the Angers' University because it was the only place where I could study in French.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I've stayed in France for 5 months and my scholarship was 475 Euros per month. Each month I received a small grant from CAF as well.
What is the student lifestyle like in Angers?
There are many French students and the city and the surroundings are very beautiful, but in my opinion it's not exactly the best place for an Erasmus student. As Erasmus people there were just 4 of us (in our school) so it was difficult to make friends with French students. The nightlife wasn't the same I expected and there were a few opportunities of travelling because of the busy schedule of my class. However, it was an experience that I'll never forget, of course.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Angers to other students?
I would recommend Angers for students who really want to widen their knowledge, because the level of education is high. Furthermore, the city is beautiful and I admire French culture as well.
What is the food like?
Food in school canteen was ok, various meals and many options. French food is generally very tasty.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Angers?
No, University in Angers helped me a lot. I lived in their dormitory.
How much does it cost to live in Angers?
Prices are usually higher. My average monthly expense was around 500 Euros (accommodation included).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes, we had French classes during the whole semester. French language is difficult, but if I'd stayed longer, I'm sure I'd have improved a lot.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Angers from your city?
I took bus straight from my city to Angers. It's absolutely not the most comfortable way of travelling, but due to all my luggage it was the easiest way for getting there.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Angers?
We often went to the James Joyce pub and other two night clubs I don't remember the name.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Angers?
La Creperie nearby University.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The city center, the Lac de Maine, the cathedral and the castle.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Angers in the future?
I advise them to be brave and not to be ashamed of speaking French, because French people generally hate speaking in English. If you have enough money, you could travel around and visit other towns that are worth to be seen. It would be great to have as much friends as you can, because French people will take care of you and parties with them are quite crazy business.
