Experience in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, by Daikel

What's it like to live in Amsterdam? Would you recommend it? What's the city like?

My experience, although short, was intense. It's a wonderful city, with its architecture and rhythm of life that casts a spell on you. You can live in a way that makes your senses come alive, with its development of the arts, always looking for inspiration. What isn't very accommodating are the prices, which require a vast expenditure when compared with other major European cities of the same historical value.

What's the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?

Student life in Amsterdam is enjoyable, with a huge campus and its well kitted-out and technologically prepared study centres that help develop the studies on its campus. There is a student fraternity, that exists both in the university and around the neighbouring areas.

How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?

I can't specify the exact cost, but the quality of life is slightly higher here. In terms of renting apartments, it's expensive, with the most expensive being around €1, 000. If you really need to be in the city for an academic reason, it is possible to find cheaper options in areas slightly further from the city centre. This wouldn't really be a problem thanks to its excellent transport links.

Was it difficult to find your accommodation in Amsterdam? Can you give any advice?

I used the internet and fortunately I found a hotel a little bit further from the centre, quite near the city's Olympic Stadium, not the most impressive area but with food and such that can be attributed to typical Dutch entities. The internet is the perfect tool to help you find what you want without any difficulty.

What's the food like in Amsterdam? What are your favourite dishes?

I would recommend the cheese croquettes, hake in sauce, beef steak and profiteroles for dessert. They are very good, you must investigate the best places, where the prices do correspond with the quality.

Visit the Heineken Experience, the Rembrandt House Museum, Dam Square, the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, the charming canals, the Imperial Palace in the heart of the city, the magnificent architecture, and even by wandering aimlessly, you will never get lost.

Is it good to eat out in Amsterdam? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

De Wereldbol and Het Zwaantje, I recommend that you lock yourself away in these two spots, with just €20 you can taste both Dutch food and food from other nationalities and satisfy your longing hunger.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Amsterdam?

Escape, Studio 80, Paradiso, Heineken Music Hall, I love these places, they are perfect for clearing the mind and undergo new experiences with people from all over the world, where your newly found Dutch patronage will coincide.

What advice would you give future students heading to Amsterdam?

Encourage yourself to get to know a city known for its fine art and spirit of the sea, not its food of the highest value. If you have this possibility do not waste it, remember to do everything you can. Amsterdam is waiting for you.
