Experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands by Lucas
What is it like to live in Amsterdam? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
For typical "party-" and "drug-"tourists, Amsterdam is great. If you are looking for something more serious, museums and all, then there is plenty as well. However, the locals, so the people that have lived from a young age in Amsterdam, are all leaving town because the tourists are taking over, and the police force can't do much about it.
What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?
Student life is great. I'm not from Amsterdam, however, I have some friends who live there. It is very, very difficult to find housing within Amsterdam, but if you can find something, you will have a great student life.
How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?
The rent is really high. I know someone who pays 600 - euros for a 5x5 apartment. On top of that, the Netherlands is a Western-European country, so the standards of living are relatively high compared to non-wester-European countries. Food and alcohol might be considered expensive, but it depends on where one is from.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Amsterdam? Is there any advice you can give?
Yes. If you can, bring a lot of money with you. If you are not able to do so, you can always live in Diemen, which is a city not far from Amsterdam, and the train will bring you to Amsterdam in no time.
What is the food like? What are your favorite dishes?
Dutch people like to eat deep-fried stuff: frikadeller, kroketten, and fries. In my opinion, the Dutch cuisine would definitely not be a reason to come to the Netherlands.
What places would you recommend visiting in Amsterdam?
Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Ajax (the football club), Museumplein, and Rembrandtplein.
Is it good to eat out in Amsterdam? Can you tell us your favorite spots?
I rarely go to Amsterdam, so I don't know this.
Is the nightlife good in Amsterdam? Where is good to go?
Yes, from what I've heard, it is. Most places around Leidseplein is where you should go to have a great nightclubbing.
What advice would you give future students heading to Amsterdam?
Please, do not think that you can do whatever you want to do. If you come only for the drugs, be careful: it can be stronger than what you are used to. Try not to disturb the locals too much. Also, the Netherlands is a small country with a lot of different cities, try to visit some.
