What is it like to live in Amsterdam? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Amsterdam is beautiful and has a lot to offer. The old city center is quite large and easy to navigate. The city as a whole is not that big either. I was born and raised here and I can say I will always love this place.

What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam has many bars, student associations, sport clubs etc. There is no need to stay in your room all day.

How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?

Living expenses can be quite high in Amsterdam, especially rent. A 12 m2 room in the private sector will set you back 500-600 euros per month. Groceries and bars are not that expansive, compared to larger cities in Europe.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Amsterdam? Is there any advice you can give?

Yes, it is hard to find a place in Amsterdam. The city has become so overwhelmingly popular that student / social housing waiting lists have become very long, too long to find a room within a couple of months. Usually the university can arrange temporary housing for internationals, but when the period has finished you are on your own.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is great depending on where you look. Amsterdam is a multicultural city with lots of places to find more exotic foods. Dutch food is nothing special, usually pretty bland. Dutch street food / snacks are recommendable though!

What places would you recommend visiting in Amsterdam?

Go to the A'dam tower (rooftop bar), Artis (zoo) and some of the famous musea. I would also highly recommend you to find your own way (by bike), since the city is so easy to navigate and everyone speaks English!

Is it good to eat out in Amsterdam? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

There are many restaurants in Amsterdam! My favorites are Haesje Claes, de Struisvogel, de Ebeling and Loetje. Cheaper options are one of the many kebab or roti places (very delicious as well!)

Is the nightlife good in Amsterdam? Where is good to go?

Nightlife can be great but also touristy. I would avoid Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein, but do try to make Dutch friends and see where they take you!

What advice would you give future students heading to Amsterdam?

Just try to find your own way and try things out. Amsterdam is amazing and has a lot to offer for anyone!
