Erasmus Experience in Amsterdam, the Netherlands by Virginia
Why did you choose to go to Amsterdam, the Netherlands?
I chose Amsterdam because it's one of the prettiest cities in Europe and above all, a student city where coming to do an Erasmus is the best. What's more, the University of Amsterdam is considered one of the best in Europe so even if you come for Erasmus, don't think it's not studying and working, here at least; this is not how it is.
How long is the scholarship for? How much money do you receive as aid?
Nowadays, the scholarships are for 5 months and are from €1, 300 to €2, 500 roundabouts, depending on all the extras that you may have due to your social standing.
How is student life in Amsterdam?
It's one of the best. There is always something to do and there are loads of festivals. Besides, the city has something every weekend; from a popular race to a night at the museums to the light festival to music festivals or concerts...
The light festival
Would you recommend the city and the University of Amsterdam to other students?
Of course. I would recommend it without having to think twice.
How is the country's food?
The country's food isn't really typical of what you eat, which means you eat what you would in Spain given that it's you who does the shopping and cooking.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Amsterdam?
I didn't find it difficult because the university helped me with it. Although if this isn't the case, yes it's a little difficult because they are expensive.
How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?
The standard of living is somewhat more expensive than in Spain but it's not excessive either. Transport and accommodation are what can cost you the most. However, as everyone uses a bike, it's economical truthfully. You only use transport if you travel to another city by train.
How's the language? Did you go to any courses at the University?
The language everywhere is English so there are no problems, although they also speak Dutch as is logical.
What's the most affordable way of getting to Amsterdam from your city?
By plane.
Which places would you recommend to go out to party in Amsterdam?
Coco's Bar, Melkeweg, Sugar Factory, Paradiso, Smookey, Panama and the pubs in Rembrandplein and Leidsplein.
And as a cultural visit?
The whole city is charming in general. I mean, do not leave any corner unseen.
Any advise that you want to give to future students in Amsterdam?
If you have the chance, go to Amsterdam. Take care before buying bikes second hand because they are usually broken and at times, it's cheaper to buy a new one than to have to take it to be fixed because your breaks are broken, you have a flat tire or a part is missing.
