Why did you choose to go to Amsterdam, Netherlands?

The collaborators were in Amsterdam. I spent eight months there.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I got the standard PhD stipend.

What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?

There are a lot of activities and partying for students. Work is fun in Amsterdam.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Amsterdam to other students?

Please, go ahead if you get a opportunity to work there. The work atmosphere in the university is very good. Foreign students would feel Amsterdam a second home within a couple of months. People are very friendly.

What is the food like?

You get varieties of food outside the university. Within university, they have varieties too but if if you are looking for Chinese, Indian or Surinamese, etc you need to eat out. But, you would find many such eateries. It is just not a issue.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Amsterdam?

Yes. Finding an accommodation in Amsterdam is a big problem. I recommend to look for accommodation a few months before arrival. I found it a bit expensive either.

How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?

Around 900- 1000 euros maximum.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes, there are language course available in the University. But, it wouldn't be a problem because people in Amsterdam can communicate in English. Some Dutch words are similar to English. You will pick a few words by just travelling around.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Amsterdam from your city?

I am at present living in Leuven, Belgium and most economical mode is by train.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Amsterdam?

Depends . There are too many eateries. If you are a vegetarian- you can go to maoz or some Indian Restaurants.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Zaanse schans( Outside Amsterdam), Anne Frank huis. For scenic place- Keukenhoff. There are many museums in Amsterdam.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Amsterdam in the future?

Apply for some cheap deals to travel if you have to take tram or bus to the University. University accommodations are a bit cheaper and hard to get. You can save money , then.
