Erasmus Experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands by Mustika Larasati
Why did you choose to go to Amsterdam, Netherlands?
I was accepted to enroll in the Erasmus Mundus Journalism programme and since the specialism that I chose was political journalism, I'm now enrolled at the University of Amsterdam.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I didn't get a scholarship but I did receive a stipend for my whole year of studying.
What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?
The student lifestyle is great. However, you could be easily be distracted by the thriving social life Amsterdam has to offer. You need to focus on what you came to do.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Amsterdam to other students?
Yes, absolutely.
What is the food like?
I'm not a big fan of the Dutch cuisine, but since Amsterdam is a melting pot, you can find from many countries in this city. Expect for Balkan cuisine, which happens to be my current favorite food. Balkan food is hard to find here.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Amsterdam?
Oh yes. Housing in Amsterdam is mad expensive.
How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?
It's hard to say. That would really depend on your lifestyle. As someone from Southeast Asia, it is pretty expensive in comparison.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The Dutch language isn't the easiest language to learn. The pronunciation is hard to nail. But if you are a native speaker of a Germanic language, I assume it would be easier. Yes, I believe you can find language courses in the university.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Amsterdam from your city?
By bike.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Amsterdam?
I like the Elandsgracht area.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Amsterdam?
For great pancakes, Boerderij Meerzicht at Amsterdamse Bos is wonderful. A little far from the city but definitely THEE best pancakes I've ever had.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
I'm not sure.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Amsterdam in the future?
The nightlife is great but don't let it distract you. Also, invest in a good bike lock. Oh yeah, I didn't know that there is such a thing called biking under the influence. It's illegal to bike while you're stoned and drunk. It's pretty rare that the police will catch you but if you're unlucky, the fine is pretty hefty.
