Erasmus Experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands by Gareth
Why did you choose to go to Amsterdam, Netherlands?
To study International Trade Publishing, at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
6 months. Around 300 Euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?
Extremely lively, many cultural events, international student parties and visits around The Netherlands and to other European destinations.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Amsterdam to other students?
Yes. I studied at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, but used some of the University of Amsterdam's facilities. Both brilliant institutions. UA is a top ranked institution on QS university rankings.
What is the food like?
Great International cuisine, 'bitterballen' from the Dutch kitchen are brilliant.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Amsterdam?
Yes, there was an up font fee, deposit and 3 months rent payment required.
How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?
Similar to the living cost in the UK. It is possible to save on transport outgoings by buying a bicycle at the beginning of your stay. Highly recommended.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes, similar to English and made easier if you have some knowledge of another Germanic language. Language classes were cancelled due to timetable clashes. This was a shame and something I regret.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Amsterdam from your city?
Fly or drive. However, the Eurostar also connects to Amsterdam now.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Amsterdam?
Bar Bukowski, Blijburg, Plekk, Amsterdam Roest, Bar Botanique or Bierfabriek. Anywhere East in Indische Buurt is great.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Amsterdam?
Mata Hari is brilliant. Also great cocktails.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Anne Frank's House, the old book market and museumplein. Go and look at the Rembrandt's.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Amsterdam in the future?
Get a bike, even if you're hesitant at first. It makes life a lot easier and it's a lovely way to explore the city.
Bring a rain coat. The Netherlands has a maritime climate - if you come from the UK, it's nothing new, but if you're used to the sunshine 300 days a year, come prepared. The spring and summer is surprisingly warm and pleasant - another reason for getting a bike.
Join the International Student's Network, you'll make some wonderful friends.
