Erasmus Experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands by Dinara

Why did you choose to go to Amsterdam, Netherlands?

This a great city with interesting history and beautiful landscapes. This is also a good place to travel from.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

My exchange program lasts for 1 semester. No scholarship received.

What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?

University of Amsterdam is very strict. Students should study hard in order to pass the course. But students manage doing both things: studying and partying.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Amsterdam to other students?

Yes, the city is wonderful. And even though it is really hard to study at UvA, it definitely worth it, because you will get very useful information and achieve new skills.

What is the food like?

The food is good, but it is quite expensive to go to the restaurant. I think the most popular snack here is French fries with mayo.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Amsterdam?

No, I found the accommodation by myself, but it was a long and nervous search.

How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?

For me it costs 1300 euros per month, 930 euros for the accommodation( I live in city center), and about 300-350 for other expenses, including traveling.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes, but I haven't attended any, unfortunately.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Amsterdam from your city?

The easiest way is by plane, because I live quite far from Netherlands, in Central Asia. It takes 7 hours to fly from Kazakhstan to Amsterdam.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Amsterdam?

Every Wednesday there is a party held by ISN at Coco's for international students. I would also recommend Rembrandt square, Dam square, and Museumplein.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Amsterdam?

Cantarell is a pretty cafe near Roeterseiland campus. Good and affordable food.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Anne Frank House, Dam square, EYE film museum, Keukenhof gardens

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Amsterdam in the future?

Try to go on every trip that ISN offers, it is fun and affordable. It is also a good chance to find new friends from all over the world.
