Why did you choose to go to Amsterdam, Netherlands?

I thought it was one of the most interesting city's from the ones I had to choose from and I really liked the program the university had to offer for me.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I get more or less 400€ per month so this covers only my rent. The rent is so cheap for me because I rent the apartment with my boyfriend. The city is pretty expensive so be prepared.

What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?

The lifestyle is amazing when u find the right people you want to spend it with. Amsterdam has a lot to offer. Even if u don't find friends (which I doubt) you can always stroll around the city and go to one of many museums.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Amsterdam to other students?

Yes!

What is the food like?

I don't really go to restaurants, because it's very expensive. I usually cook at home :) . Although because I study nutrition and dietetics we had classes where I could taste the real Dutch food... and it was quite tasty!

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Amsterdam?

I would recommend asking your university about dekey, DUWO or Ymere. If your school doesn't work with those companies try contacting them yourself. It is the best and the cheapest accommodation you will find. The biggest advantage is living with other international students.

How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?

If u want to rent a room it's about 600-800€.
It's cheaper if u use one of the companies I mentioned.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

The language is kind of a mix of German and English. If u understand those languages it will probably be easier for you to learn it. The schools offer just a class on basics so if you really want to learn the language I would recommend buying a course outside the university .

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Amsterdam from your city?

The most economical would be by bus but if you look you can get really cheap airplane tickets. It's worth it since you will probably have a lot of luggage.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Amsterdam?

There are a lot of pubs and nice clubs on rembrandtplein and leidseplein.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Amsterdam?

Unfortunately I eat at home because of the prices in restaurants.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

I would recommend taking a boat trip through the canals, Van Gogh museum and the zoo is also very nice!

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Amsterdam in the future?

Buy or bring a small heater before coming here, the heating breaks down here sometimes. I would also come here earlier when all the introduction weeks start. Bring a rain jacket (it rains a lot !) and don't forget pots, pans etc.(unless you are planing to go to ikea)
