Discovering Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a really beautiful city, I've been there two times on the last 2 months. The first time to go to the "Amsterdam Dance Event" and the second just to spend the weekend with friends.
Depends on where you live to arrive in Amsterdam is really easy. The suggestion that I give to the people living really close to the border of Netherlands (I'm in Aachen), is to buy group ticket for the train, from 4 up to 10 people, and you spend just 7 euro each for a daily ticket that allows you to go all around the Netherlands. You can also buy more ticket if you are less than 10 and resell it on the facebook group "NS group ticket". There you can also find people selling group ticket.
Once you are in Amsterdam, depends on what you want to do; ), you can go to visit some cultural places such as Dam square, there you can see the royal palace, the "Madame Tussauds wax museum" and the Cathedral.
If you go in Nieuwmarkt you can find every morning the market with interesting stuff.
Nearby Nieuwmarkt there is Chinatown.
If you go east you will see a green structure that looks like a green emerging ship, that is the "Nemo", a building created by Renzo Piano and there is the science museum. From the top you will have a really beautiful view of the city.
I suggest also to go visit the flower market and Rembrandt square on the south.
If your trip is for different purpose than improve your culture, you can go visit the red light district, remember that you can't take pictures there.
If you want to make a stoner experience, you can find a lot of coffeeshop, as usually cheaper ones are aoutside of the touristic areas. Don't smoke joints on the street, is not allowed. Don't buy any drug outside of the coffeeshops.
