Motivation letter

Hello!

Today I decided to write a short story about few things related to jobs and internships. Since David decided to stay in Netherlands and he started to look for a job, he told me many tips I would like to share with you. Firstly, you should be aware that the admission process is normally long and it is normal that you have to wait for example few weeks. The first step is showing your interest and sending a motivation letter. I am enclosing the example from him:

Dear Ms. "Unknown",

I would like to use the following lines to explain my interest in --------- and to provide some additional information about myself. I am currently finishing my Master’s in --------- at the University of -------. The programme has provided me with a deep understanding of modern financial markets. Courses like Derivatives and Fixed Income Investment helped me to understand complex financial products. With GPA ---, I recently graduated cum laude at the top of my class. Previously, I obtained my bachelor’s degree at University Y where I gained a solid background in mathematics, statistics and econometric through a variety of both theoretical and applied courses. One example worth mentioning would be a serie of 4 consequent Mathematics courses, covering many things from linear algebra to systems of differential equations, both applied and theoretical. The course was stretched over the span of two years and its average passing rate was only about 30%. Besides my interest in finance, I have always been interested in programming and tech development, proof of which can be my early work experience as a C# Net developer in ----. Following that, I employed both my financial and IT skills within an internship at the company X in Prague. Using an extensive VBA/Excel programming and Thomson Reuters, I created a standalone tool for preparing an automated email distribution of a daily financial newsletter which is still actively used. This experience helped me to improve my teamwork capabilities but also individual responsibility. Furthermore, after the internship ended, I was offered position as a junior auditor which again required VBA programming.

I am also genuinely interested in trading and investment. I have been working with forex strategies and algorithms and trading them on own account since my early years at the university. This experience allowed me to improve my mental arithmetic skills and the ability to quickly make decisions under pressure. Furthermore, I have recently finished a thesis internship at --------. As part of my project, I have constructed a large sample of equity data from both public sources and Bloomberg terminal, which I analyzed using a complex econometric model. The aim is to investigate liquidity properties of almost fifty thousand listed assets, all using programming in Python. I believe that the knowledge of finance and my programming skills allow me to efficiently conduct a complex financial analysis, which is crucial for any kind of investment. Since I am eager to face new challenges and I am enthusiastic about both fundamental and technical market analysis, I find working with you as a very rare opportunity where I would be able to employ my individual creativity and desire for innovation while learning from a highly professional and passionate team. Furthermore, from what my friend told me, -------- is highly professional, open and international company with very interesting business spectrum which is exactly what I am looking for.

Please find my CV in the second attachment and in case you find my profile interesting please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

With kind regards,

Name

In the first paragraph you should definitely mention the purpose why you are writing to the company and if you are done with your studies or no. You can also explain what your program included and what you have learnt at the university. For sure, you should mention obtained GPA (if it is great). Later, you can talk about the previous studies. Another important thing are your relevant hobbies – such as student organizations or courses you have taken. We are getting to the most important part – previous work experience. You should definitely talk about your relevant previous working experience. Moreover, it is good to mention what exactly you were working on and what you have learnt. Last, but not least, it is important to express the reasons why you are a good candidate for the advertised position and also why you would like to work in this company. In the end, you can say how the company can contact you and sign the letter.

After sending a motivation letter, it usually takes some time to answer and there will probably be another round. Normally, there are at least three rounds - motivation letter, home assignment, Skype or call interview and then personal interview or tests. It sounds really crazy. I hope that the letter will help you and it is important to be prepared.
