Undiscovered beaches in Alicante

Today I’m releasing a blog and I’m going to talk to you about my homeland, Alicante.

Let’s be clear, Postiguet beach (Alicante) and Levante beach (Benidorm) are very good. Close to the bars, restaurants, leisure activities… with hammocks, parasols and lots of atmosphere.

But you can find these beaches anywhere in the world. Overlooked by infinite buildings and boring promenades. Very few remain when we speak about adventure, of flora and fauna, of nature, of unspoilt beaches… of Mediterranean.

After 24 years of inspecting every corner of the Costa Blanca I stick with the following beaches:

1. Villajoyosa

Made up of more than 10 beaches, each one with a particular characteristic:

  • Playa central: the city’s only conventional beach, with fine sand, but it’s known because it’s on the shore of one of Spain’s most colourful old towns. Hundreds of little brightly coloured houses surround this beach.

Despite being a central beach, the water is crystal clear.

I bathe all year round, photo taken on 24th of December.

  • Playa del Bol Nou: A small bay hardly 25km from Alicante, which becomes a temple in summer for tourists from the peninsula. It is hidden from the sight of those who don’t dare to venture deep into nature, given that it is found between two dull cliffs. The hottest months of the year see a beach bar with live music every night.

  • Playa de los Estudiantes: In the East of the city, there are three consecutive beaches that form a spectacular promenade. Kilometres of pebbles that allow you to go to the beach without getting covered in sand. Perfect for dining out in the moonlight.

  • Playa del Moro: It is found near to the city centre, with hardly any buildings around it. It’s a wild beach for the most daring people, perfect for fishing.

  • Playa del Torres: Surrounded by eucalyptus, there is a campsite with various leisure activities.

  • Playa El Paraiso: The city’s second largest beach, with a campsite and the possibility to rent kayaks from the Alicante Aventura organisation.

  • Raco del conill: The road to Benidorm finds itself in the middle of a natural area. A nudist beach for the most adventurous. Although there are waves on the whole of the Costa Blanca, this bay will always remain calm.

  • Playa del Montiboli: It’s found at the foot of the Montiboli hotel. It is made up of 2 beaches (Caleta and Esparralló), the latter allows nude bathing and is a perfect escape.

2. Jávea, Denia, Benitachell

  • Cala Moraig (Benitachell): A beach that is difficult to access, where you need to lose yourself in the buildings of the ultra-rich. On the path you can climb the hill where the Vuelta Ciclista España finished a few years ago and you can see from Benidorm to Gandia - spectacular! After a few ups and downs you arrive at an inclining path that allows you to access the beach. There is an amazing cave in which you can submerge yourself, to one side of a very high cliff. The beach bar alerts you to the fact that you’re off the beaten path, which is reflected in the prices.

  • playas-desconocidas-alicante-2cb57d35a2e

  • Playa Portichol (Javea): This beach is very close to La Granadella and has an incredible charm. The white houses remind you of Andalucia and there are two islands where you ca go swimming.

  • Cala del Ambolo (Javea): This beach is between La Granadella and Portixol, it’s a nudist beach with spectacular cliffs.
  • playas-desconocidas-alicante-c56c24fa328

  • Cova Tallada, Cap de Sant Antoni (Denia): From this beach there is an adventurous path towards Cova Tallada. The path isn’t suitable for everyone, you need appropriate footwear. It’s a unique place in Spain, where you can spend the entire day inside a cave with the scent of the sea.

3. Altea

As well as being a gorgeous village with a spectacular old town and white houses, Altea has a beach that connects the faro del Albir (Albir lighthouse), a typical Sunday trail, where it’s possible to take a detour and plunge into the empty, rocky beaches.

Moving away from Benidorm and next to Calpe we find the Pueblo Mascarat (Mascarat village), a mountainous area where two abandoned beaches are waiting to be visited, with spectacular scenery.

4. Calpe

Cala de Gasparet, a few kilometres after the Mascarat village is this beautiful beach with views of the most famous rock in Spain.

5. Salinas de San Pedro

On the border of Murcia we find an unspoilt natural park, with more than 3km of beaches, dunes and salt lakes where you can lose yourself and be caught between two seas, the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean sea. You can’t access this beach by car to prepare yourself for a day of walking and photographs.
