Experience in Alexandroupoli, Greece by Polychronis
What is it like to live in Alexandroupoli? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Being a student in Alexandroupolis (talking about myself) gave me the opportunity to experience all aspects of life/weather. It is a town that you can go anywhere in maximum 10 minutes. There are also Russian and Armenian people, so that makes it multicultured as a town. Maybe for some people the cold weather on winter is an issue (of course for Russian it is NOT, but for Medditeranean people it is), but it is a nice town with things to do. Definetelly a summer town because of the beaches!
What is the student lifestyle like in Alexandroupoli?
A student lifestyle is normal. There are student bars/cafes with nice prices, cheap public transportation (it is free for the students of Alexandroupoli!). There is also a place called "Anagnostirio" where student parties and more are held. There, you can see movies for free every Friday, have dance classes for free, participate on the theater group, the rhitorical group and many more. It is a must and a luxury, that I didnt have when I first starting studying in Alexandroupolis in 2012.
How much does it cost to live in Alexandroupoli?
The rents are a bit high (280-350euros) due to the fact that Alexandroupolis is close to the Turkish borders and the town has many millitaries. In general you can find cheap stuff for food and drinks. Supermarkets are normal with the prices. I would say besides the rent, someone would need 70euros per week in order to be able to go out for a drink, shop from super market, and grab lunch out.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Alexandroupoli? Is there any advice you can give?
Accomondation is not difficult to find. Cheap accomondation though, it is difficult, yes! There are certain periods that if you start looking you mind be nerve wracked. For example if you start finding accomondation on September/October it would be super hard, because that is the time that the new students are comming and they also search for a house. Usully it is easier in January, February, and June, July, since a lot of people get their degree then.
Tip: Be sure to check all the electical pillers, since people tend to leave rent ads for apartement, which are cheaper!
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is a bit basic. The majority of food shops are Gyros type. There are of course others with are super glamorous and with amazing gastronomy, but you gotta pay more. ( I had lunch on Thema (a drinks and restaurant) and I payed 25euros!). Favourite dishes are a wrapped pita chicken souvlaki from Kokoraki, and everything Gialos has!
What places would you recommend visiting in Alexandroupoli?
The lighthouse!! It is the most erotical place in this town. You can see the sunset and is the typical place to meet people. Also the many parks that there are. Ethonological musuem is a must, since you can see many alteranive performances.
Is it good to eat out in Alexandroupoli? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
As I already mentioned it is rather basic. Favorite spots are Kokoraki, Agora, Gialos.
Is the nightlife good in Alexandroupoli? Where is good to go?
If you like Greek music then, you are in heaven. If you are bit a more alternative person who likes more chill situation, well there are things for you too. For greek music and the so called "Bouzoukia" thing there are Politia and PiCo, while for more alternative things you can go to Alter Ego, Gitonia (on Saturdays karaoke party!), Utopia. For more chic things you can go to Eccentrico, Thema.
What advice would you give future students heading to Alexandroupoli?
If you are coming on winter, get some warm clothes. If you are coming on summer get some extra swim suits! People are friendly and willing to help. That's all i have to say. If someone needs to know more, I am willing to help! :)
