Experience in Alexandroupoli, Greece by Nikos
What is it like to live in Alexandroupoli? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Alexandroupolis is small City even for Greek Standards, which means that there are certain pros and cons. In General it is easy to meet people and especially the students here while walking around the city is both easy and very safe. (Generally speaking is one of the safest cities in Greece). However apart from the city beach and the seaside are it does not offer any special architectural or natural beauty. There are very nice places for small excursion in the nearby region, however the city itself is nothing special in this essence.
If someone wants to go for an Erasmus in Greece and the only available option is Alexandroupolis then they should come. However I will only advise for someone to come during the summer semester as the city is fells much better at that time. All in all living here for about six months is fine and especially during Autumn and summer you will enjoy many perks and you will be able to get the pros of typical Greek lifestyle.
What is the student lifestyle like in Alexandroupoli?
MY personal opinion that there are not many students in the city and that is the main problem. However the student community has become very active in recent years organizing events and parties. In addition there cultural students clubs which overall upgrades the studentlife here.
How much does it cost to live in Alexandroupoli?
You can rent an one bedroom apartment for 200-300 and a studio for around 200. The monthly bills for the house should be around 50 euros and I would say that 10 euros per day are more than enough for your daily costs. Overall with a budget of around 750 you can have a very pleasant life without having to be financially restrained.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Alexandroupoli? Is there any advice you can give?
The easiest way to find accommodation is by going in one of the real estate agents in the city. The agent fee is equal to one months-rent (and it might be spitted between the landowner and the tenant (you try to find accommodation by yourself but it will be harder I think) Generally speaking accommodation ins Greece is much cheaper than in the rest of Europe. Finding a flat or a studio to rent will not be that hard. However if you come in middle of the year you might face some difficulties. Also I would sugget finding houses in the City center as public transport for areas around the city is not convinient.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
To me the strongest part of the City it is food-scene. Apart from the typical gyros you can taste very nice traditional Greek cuisine in restaurants and taverns all over the city. Moreover do not miss the traditional Thracian dishes like kavourmas and also pay a visit to the tavern-like "ladokoles". You can very nice food in a very good price.
Also one can taste very nice seafood which is also highly recommended.
However if you are vegan or vegeterian I would suggest to consideri changing into flexitarian while being in the city.
What places would you recommend visiting in Alexandroupoli?
If we are talking about landmarks or museum nothing special exists. However do not miss the chance and pay a visit to extended regions natural landmarks.
Visit the Dadia Natural Park and of course do a trip to the River Evros' Delta National Park.
Is it good to eat out in Alexandroupoli? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
For meat lovers go to the Ladokoles area and pick any restaurant they are all more or less the same but it is genuine experience that you should try.
For restaurants I would suggest Loukoulos (especially for meat) and have a trditional ouzo and mezedes at Sarikas.
Also I would suggest the Leukes restaurant (a little but further from the city center) but be there around 20:00 if you want to find a atble0
For a more high-class and if you wan to spent a little more also go one day in Ai-Giorgis Taverma.
Also for cheapr street food have a gyros is lavas pit from either Kokoraki or Gyropoiito
Is the nightlife good in Alexandroupoli? Where is good to go?
It depends on your taste however there the places are overall limited.
CLubbing in Prive Club'
For Traditional Greek Bouzoukia you should go to Pico-Night Club.
For more chilled out and coosy situation you must try going to Geitonia Mou place (however sometimes it is not reall chilled and they might be throwing a party). ALso go to Outopia and if the weather is good sit outside for a beer or ouzo.
For late night places there two options but might seem a bit suitable hardcore rock faun but give it a try gouing to Rock an Roll bar and Bacardy Bar (try thei shots at Cacardi)
Obviously do not miss the students parties at the Universities reading are building (or Anagnostirio as it is called).
If you want to try more poshy places you can go to Drunk Sinatra Bar and I would suggest drinking a coctail in Bar Cohen as well.
What advice would you give future students heading to Alexandroupoli?
Try to be were local students like to be and be flexible on the options you have especially when it come to night-life. Generally night-life in Greece is not similar to that abroad and in Alexandroupolis it is even more Special. However if you happen to be in Alexandroupolis do your best to enjoy is as much as possible by doing anything that it has to offer.
