Erasmus Experience in Alcalà de Henares, Spain by Ophélie

Why did you choose to go to Alcalá De Henares, Spain?

I chose Alcala because it was the closest town to the capital, so there aren't the disadvantages of living in the center of a big city and you can still get around easily.

How long are you staying for? How much finacial aid will you receive?

My stay lasts 9 months. I will receive the Erasmus+ scholarship and the grant provided by the region, but I do not know the exact amount, it should be around 2500€ in total.

Would you recommend the city and the university of Alcalá De Henares to other students?

Absolutely, the city is really nice, especially the center. It's very friendly, there are always people on the streets. The university is very good, however it depends on the faculty as they are not all located in the center.

How is food in this country?

It's a treat, but it is also very fatty because the Spaniards love to cook with a lot of oil... A balanced meal does not hurt from time to time even if you want to enjoy the typical food to the max.

Have you had difficulties finding accommodation in Alcalá De Henares?

Not at all, there are adverts in every corner of the university, the notice boards... but the best option to search for accomodation is social networks.

What is the cost of living in Alcalá De Henares?

The cost of living is not really expensive, especially if you compare it to France... You can easily eat out for 3€. Generally, renting a room in a shared flat doesn't exceed 300€, which is still quite affordable.

How is learning the language? Have you been to language courses organized by the university?

The language courses aren't organized by the university, instead they are run by Alcalingua which is a partner of it. However, you have to pay to attend.

But I do not see the pont of taking classes because you learn the language throughout day to day life.
