Erasmus Experience in Aix-en-Provence, France by Nadine

Why did you choose to go to Aix-en-Provence, France?

Because of the beautiful surrounding, nice weather, language and the culture.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I received 260euros a month from the Erasmus program.

What is the student lifestyle like in Aix-en-Provence?

The student life is great, especially because of the weather, you're able to be outside a lot and enjoy the beautiful surrounding and beaches. Also, because the city is not too big you can do everything by walking which is great. It feels very safe and it is cosy. There are quite a lot of bars and restaurants for such as small town, so for 4/5 months you don't have to be bored. I had many parties during my Erasmus time and I met great people.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Aix-en-Provence to other students?

It is not always very well organized but that's also something you can learn from, I would not recommend it because of the great quality of study but more to have a good time and meet many international students and learn from studying in another country.

What is the food like?

The food is great, a warm meal for lunch.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Aix-en-Provence?

No, I lived in the residence together with many other international students, I would definitely recommended this. I was in Gazelle, which was newer than other buildings. Maybe I would have been less positive about the other buildings.

How much does it cost to live in Aix-en-Provence?

Depends where you live, the costs of living can raise tremendously. But my room costed 260 euro, doing groceries can also be quite expensive. And of course, you don't want to miss out on the trips of ESN. I would say that you need 800-1000 euro a month.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

There are language courses, but you don't learn a lot here. Basic French will be sufficient for the live in the city. You can follow courses in English. A better French will be a great advantage though as many people dont speak English well.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Aix-en-Provence from your city?

By KLM via Marseille.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Aix-en-Provence?

IPN, Mistral, Rue de Laverrie.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Aix-en-Provence?

La Familia, Chez Grand Mere, Crepes Cidre et Compagnie, Le contrepoint.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

City of the water springs, many different ones. Also you can visit a wine castle. You can go to the Saint Victoire, to the sea, Marseille is close to Aix. Many nice landscapes as well. Some museums can be found in Aix as well as in Marseille. There are two cinemas in Aix.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Aix-en-Provence in the future?

Enjoy!
